Default Police steal Iphone used in videotaping arrest

This one stinks bad

http://ca.news.yahoo.com/man-wants-p...162231293.html

An Edmonton man wants police to return an iPhone that he says was seized by an officer while he was videotaping an arrest.
Corey Maygard, 25, captured the video last Friday because he thought police were using excessive force to detain a man near the Salvation Army in downtown Edmonton.
"They had the one guy somewhat hog-tied behind his back," Maygard said. "And they were dragging him."
Maygard says one of the officers approached and told him to stop recording. He refused.
"He at that point turned me around, read me my rights," Maygard said. "Took my phone. Turned the video off and arrested me for obstruction of justice."
Maygard was taken to downtown police headquarters where he spent the night in cells. The charge was withdrawn in court on Monday.
"There is nothing that prevents an individual from videoing an event that's taking place in public," his lawyer Danny Lynn said.
The court ordered police to return all of Maygard's belongings, including his iPhone. However, the phone hasn't yet been found.
Police say the information isn't yet in their property and exhibit system. This can take time as there is a large amount of property that needs to be processed each day.
They say they are doing their best to track it down as soon as possible.

Who are these idiot cops? They're just asking to get their asses handed to them in court.

Unbelievable. Some cops think they are a law unto themselves. I wonder if he has a case for false arrest where he could sue the policemen, the police dept, and the city.

Not big on sueing people but what other options does he have for recompense and to make sure the arresting officers are punished for their actions.

I bet the video has mysteriously vanished if the phone ever turns up.

Do you want to seize my computer as well for a few days? I use the word pigs to often describe people I loathe. In this case the word pig wasn't used in the typical cop hating way, just that this man is a pig for abusing this guys civil rights.

That's very extreme, and if you ban people for calling police pigs, then there's a million other things you'd have to ban people for on CP, and half our members would be gone.

But I do agree it's a crappy term to dish out.

Pigs? That is kind of harsh to say about men and women that are risking their lives everyday for you to be safe.

Anyways, I respect police a lot but I have to say this sounds all too familiar. I had my run ins with the police when I was younger and I can't even remember the amount of stuff of mine that was "lost". They forsure 100% do this stuff on purpose because they can. I've had about 4 licenses disappear out of thin air and the officer who conficated it couldn't tell me where it went and I had to go get a new one. My phone was also "lost" when they towed my car. If the police confiscate your belongings and they don't like you, you probably will never see that item again.

I'm fairly sure I've used the word pigs a dozen times before for people that aren't cops.

Not that I'm trying to take it back because they're cops, and I have something against calling a bad cop a pig.

I'll be sure to thank the next cop passing out tickets in a speed trap for saving my life. What cops saving peoples lives has to do with this one jagoff abusing his power sure beats the crap out of me tho.

Why not? You get suspended for calling someone an idiot on this board. The other board at least tries to be respectful of others. I'm willing to bet there are at least a few law enforcement officers on this board who don't take kindly to that.

Frankly, the term pisses me off and is a huge disrespect for a ton of hardworking people. See it more and more these days and it appears to now be cool to generalize and bash authority figures.

Dude, seriously, give it up. You called cops pig, it's a crappy thing to do, but not the end of the world. Pigs is the derogatory name for cops. There's no way in hell you meant it in any other way than to call them by their derogatory slang name.

You said "pigs" and that's plural, meaning you think all cops are pigs. If you said "pig", I'd have no problem with that.

Sometimes a guy reminds you why he was banned 20+ times.

Well of course they give warnings and public shamings first, but in the end if the person keeps it up, they are shown the door.
