Asian woman kicked off $100 bill
http://www.calgaryherald.com/busines...230/story.html
ok first of all, I don't even really see a distinctly Asian person in this image. It's not like they drew a picture of a Geisha looking into a microscope.
but I also want to know who was in these focus groups was so ragingly offended by an Oriental-ish woman on there, demanding that all cultures get equal representation? cause now they're just putting a white person on there instead, and I'm pretty sure nobody's going to be like, hey what about us Asians and Hispanics and Indians and Blacks, we want a piece of that action too!
anyways I'm not offended or concerned about it either way, just thought it was odd.
Edit: ok the story doesn't explicitely say the above image is the new de-Asianed bill, but after checking again, it is. Thanks to peeps for pointing that out. I can't find an image of the original draft, but now I can safely assume it really did depict a Geisha scientist.

Did you read the story? It was pulled (not in above pic I believe) because they didnt want to offend Asians, by stereotyping them that they are all good with sciences and math, etc. The fact the bill is brownish yellow made it even worse, so they tried to make it more race neutral to not offend anyone.
It wasn't a case of "ew, asians, get them off my money"

It bugs how the media has characterized this. Theyve used words such as "banned" and "purged" from the $100 bill. Instead, they could have said the bill was redesigned which seems to more accurately reflect whats happed here. Nobody was banned or purged. The media is trying to incite readers.

That's a pretty rame thing to get offended about.
Also, they should've put Banting on there instead of some generic person. But I guess he's just another old white guy.

This. I was just about to re-edit my above post to discuss this. I saw the article on CBC and totally thought it was about them banning Asians from the bill; but it turns out to be for totally legit reasons. Good on the focus group.
The newspapers are just being themselves, creating sensationalist headlines that are totally contrary to the actual events.

You can't deny that it works though. I clicked the link to read the story and may not have if it just said the bill was getting a slight redesign.
As long as people follow those links they will keep making the headlines that way.

That's not entirely true. This whole story is just a bunch of PC bull#### piled on top of even more PC bull#### and everyone involved should be ashamed.
So first we have these overly sensitive morons:
Quote:
"Some believe that it presents a stereotype of Asians excelling in technology and/or the sciences. Others feel that an Asian should not be the only ethnicity represented on the banknotes. Other ethnicities should also be shown."
A few even said the yellow-brown colour of the $100 banknote reinforced the perception the woman was Asian, and "racialized" the note.
|
Then we have this racist moron:
Quote:
One person in Fredericton commented: "The person on it appears to be of Asian descent which doesn't rep(resent) Canada. It is fairly ugly."
|
Then another overly sensitive moron:
Quote:
"The fact that an Asian woman's features were introduced to the bill ... I think itself is a huge step forward in achieving true multiculturalism in Canada," Huang, 24, said in an interview in Ottawa.
"But the fact that the proposal was rejected represents a huge step back."
She said the "overly sensitive" decision to remove the Asian features suggests prejudice against visible minorities persists in Canada.
|
followed by morons we already knew about from when the bills were first introduced:
Quote:
The $50 and $20 banknotes feature a research icebreaker and the Canadian National Vimy Memorial respectively, with no images of ordinary Canadians. Some members of the focus groups said the Vimy memorial looked disturbingly like New York's twin towers, brought down by terrorists in 2001.
|
And of course the government is involved. That's on an entirely distinct level of stupidity.

I want a new hundred dollar bill that features ALL Asians currently living in Canada.
This is so stupid that it threatens to ruin my Friday.

Why wouldn't they just put an image of Dr. Banting on the bill if they want to celebrate Canadian accomplishments in the field of medical science (and insulin in particular)?

Just how does that women look Asian?
That is the most Caucasian looking Asian women i have seen.
If they are depicting the use of science and Insulin is being featured as a discovery then why in the blue hell is Dr.Banting not on the bill instead to begin with.

Is a positive stereotype like that a bad thing? I know we have quite a few Asian CPers; would you have found that offensive? To me that simply says that Asians are known for being smart and hard working.
Now had it shown the lady driving home and illistrating some Asian driving stereotype; I could see that as being considered offensive.

I really try not to read Herald comments because it causes permanent brain damage, but dammit I just can't help myself because it's such an epic train wreckage.

It's not offensive to me (I'm an accountant, hee). But I can understand that argument.
That's all they're known for. Being smart and geeky. An Asian guy can't be 'cool'. He can't be a good dancer at a club, he can't pick up girls at the bar, he can't be on the basketball team (that's why Asians fell head over heels with Jeremy Lin, a mediocre basketball player as best).
"Thanks to Jeremy Lin, I feel truly American now" blah blah blah.
The Asian guy can't be a GQ supermodel. Can't be an actor or in the performing arts. He could be in music but just piano or violin.
Asian girls at least are seen as cute and pretty... Asian guys are not. They're just good at science and technology.
