This one is more legit compared to most others which may have slanted criterias. I don't mind these lists and at least it keeps Vancouver people happy as it seems to be their lone claim to fame.

The MoneySense list was by far the worst. You shouldn't base your opinion of all ranking on that.

SebC's ranking of city rankings

Economist
Other
Moneysense

(I haven't looked at the Economist's list, but I'm assuming it's the best based on what I have read from them.)

I made my first trip back to Calgary in six years this summer. I haven't had any inclination to go back since I left, but I couldn't deny that it's a beautiful city and seems a very nice place to live. it seems terribly inconvenient to me in that everything is so spread out, and the downtown core was ridiculously boring, so the city doesn't feel like it has much character, but it is a very nice place.

Calgary definitely has the most boring downtown I've seen (admitedly have not been in downtown Edmonton), though I would say I enjoy Calgary's downtown skyline more than any city besides Montreal. I also think having the C-Train above ground does downtown Calgary a huge disservice.

Not in those areas but in the 50's there was a plan drawn up for a huge lake in the south, started around where mackenzie is now and ended with a dam about 15 miles south. parts of it would have been 2.5 miles wide.

Would have been crazy awesome.

Even Toronto? I know Melbourne has some massive buildings too. I would say those two cities have much more impressive skylines than Calgary or Montreal.

Calgary ranked 49th best skyline in the world. Much like we are spoiled by being so close to the mountains Calgarians are spoiled by having one of the best skylines in the world.

These ranking favour certain factors at which Calgary excels. We have to remember that we enjoy some of the best education, healthcare, environment, economy, civil society anywhere in the world. Things we largely take for granted.

Where we still need more work in my opinion is urban vitality and that buzz of a big city. There are great pockets in Calgary, but there's room for improvement. That will largely come naturally with growth and redevelopment (we're tiny on a global scale), but we need to make the right decisions about our planning and investments in our community (transit, public space, streets - in particular).

I've lived in Melbourne, Calgary, and Vancouver and would rank them in that order in terms of liveability.

This reminded me of that Simpsons episode where Mr. Burns hires Homer to be his monkey and he goes "Well, well. It looks like my monkey has evolved into a man........................a poor man."

Homer: Oh, why'd he have to say that extra thing?

Full disclosure: I am a subscriber to the Economist.
How on earth do you get through them all?

I had to stop subscribing. They just started to pile up. I'd get half way through one, and another would come, then another, and another--all while I was still on the first one.

Incidentally, I have a pile of 2011/12 Economists if anybody wants them. They're heading to recycling regardless . . .

Haha, it is definitely a challenge. I find getting it on your tablet/smartphone can help you keep up when you have a spare minute. Plus I log in at work and read an article or two while I'm having lunch at my desk.

I think The Onion had a headline once along the lines of "Economist to stop printing for 3 months to let readers catch up."
