Shouldn't you euthanize a 19 year old dog? Wouldn't that be more humane?

My sister told me she is getting ready to put down her dog. Her dog has been with them for almost 18 years now and I've got nothing but good memories of that dog in all the time I've known her. I'm not a pet guy really but that chokes me up a little I have to say.

I've always had a love for dogs, but never really understood the connection a person and a dog (and maybe other animals I dunno) can have until I got my puppy a few months ago. A very touching story indeed.

I don't have children yet but my two dogs are like kids to me and my fiance. I love those dogs as if they were my own flesh and blood.
They're Canadian too!

It's unusual for a dog to live that long. Makes me think the dog is continuing to live because he knows his master needs him. Hope my lab lives a long life for the same reason.

Sweet!! 19 years is a long lifespan for a dog. I hope he makes it to 20. Golden Retrievers, on average, last about 12-13 years. Great Danes I hear, last about 8. Way too short.

What an awesome view point! It wouldn't surprise me at all if the dog was willing itself to live for the sake of it's owner. We would never be able to determine one way or the other, but its a nice way to think about things.

Just heard from my vet that the results of a new study out shows the overfed rounded labs live an average of 11 years, whereas the labs in good shape (you can easily see their waist) live an average of 14 years. I suppose barring any hereditary weaknesses.
