Leo Manzano waved the flag of the U.S. and Mexico after winning Silver

I personally don't see anything wrong with this, and thought the author got a little to prideful of the states, but hey, maybe that is what the Olympics are about!
Also, I wonder if it has anything to do with it being "Mexico" and the illegal immigrant issue and the author mentions in his article as well.
http://www.cnn.com/2012/08/10/opinio...html?hpt=hp_c1
Should make an interesting discussion though, should this action be considered distasteful or nothing wrong with it?

Does it matter? Both flags were made in China.

It wouldnt have bothered me if donivan Bailey had a Jamaican flag and a Canadian flag. I cheered for Missy Franklin because she had Canadian parents. The olympics shouldnt be about jingoistic chest thumping. So if this athlete is proud of his mexican heritage he should be allowed to acknowledge that.

It's difficult sometimes to decide what is more important to identify with in your heart - your country or your nation (they are not always the same). There is an expectation that you are in the Olympics to represent your country though, and if your country is sponsoring you financially, I think you need to respect that.

As am immigrant, I feel nothing but love for Canada. I have no links or feelings for my former country (I was his age when we moved).
This type of stuff drives me nuts. Does anyone beleive that had he/his family remained in Mexico that he would have won a silver medal?

After attending St. Francis High School I can say I'm against this after watching 5th generation Canadians waving Italian flags all over the place every day some hairy guy was about to kick a ball over the net in penalty kicks.
You should accept the country you were raised in as your own, and be grateful for the opportunities it presented you growing up and show your appreciation and pride when representing it.

And no matter how bad Canada sucks at soccer, that should be your favorite team.

Hmm I came to Canada from the US when I was 5. My parents were Canadian citizens and thus, I became a Canadian citizen upon entry. I carry both citizenships, but consider myself a Canadian above all else. I'm not sure what I'd do given his situation. Its hard to say because it depends on how you feel about where you came from. I'm assuming much of his family is from, and still lives in, Mexico and therefore Mexico is cheering for him as well. And especially considering the low medals that Mexico takes compared to USA I can understand it.

He's proud of his heritage and his upbringing. So what? Are we limited to only cheering for the soil we were born on?

Not at all. I cheer for other places. Remember, that he is not a spectator. He is part of the US Olympic team. If he want to wave his flag in support of Mexician athletes at an event other than his....go ahead. But when you are out there wearing the uniform of the country that took you win, and funded you dream....well have some courtesy.

It's extra bad in Canada because we really aren't raised with an ingrained national identity to be proud of. We're perhaps too polite to celebrate ourselves and it's lame.

As for the 5th generation flag waving thing, at the risk of stereotyping, Italians seem to be the "worst" for this. Worst in quotations because it doesn't really hurt anyone so meh. I assume there's a lot of "Brown Pride" stuff for kids who are 3rd and 4th generation Americans as well ... but that's a little different since there are a LOT of Americans living in what was Mexico, there's a more tangible connection.

I would bet if he wasnt fast enough for the US team he would have ran for the mexican team ala Brett Hall. The big reason for running for the US is corporate sponsership and publicity for winning.

Couple of things:
Who is Brett Hall?So he picked the US team because it was better money wise and better training?
Don't you think he should only be thanking them???
