The default should be changed to 47 in honour of Sven, and that should be the only option.

One of the smaller, more niche forums I go to occasionally is a "Yahoo groups" forum. You have to click each reply individually in order to read that reply...which makes you load a new page for each reply. Its a stellar pain in the ass and due to being full of older people, they're too stubborn to change to something less painful.

Changing the page settings is like a circumcision. It's not the way we were created, but it's much more convenient and aesthetically pleasing. The ladies love more posts per page, no doubt.
