For a good example of American safety paranoia and gun culture, read this:

I was thinking more along the lines of this, but more... Clint Eastwood-ish.

A person with the Twitter handle "Sir Robert Borden," eighth Prime Minister of Canada, wrote "Despite being PM I did not visit the first Calgary Stampede. Any hoodlums or ne'er do wells wondering need not ask."

Mwahahaha.

Doesn't look like he's getting a lot of support on the home front judging by the police department comments and a few of those readers.

Kalamazoo - pop 74,000. Number of murders in 2010 - 14

Calgary - pop 1.1 million. Number of murders in 2010 - 15

But clearly this guy sits on the fringe, but I'm sure he's not alone.
It disturbs me that even if they're on the fringe, there is still a pretty good number of these kinds of nutjobs around. As someone mentioned elsewhere in this thread, these are a big percentage of the people demanding their gun rights, and these are exactly the people who should never own a firearm.

And then find out he's a cop, which is terrifying in a whole other way. It's sad that the police force is full of so many wonderful people who genuinely want to help others, but then there are these idiots who bring the whole force down.

Sometimes I'm so incredibly embarrassed of my nation.

Having driven from Pittsburgh to Muskegon, MI (across the entirety of both Ohio and Michigan), I can confirm that there are massive boring expanses of grass in Michigan. And if he wants new, different boring expanses, he can just go south into Ohio because that's the entire state, a massive boring expanse of grass, barns, and a couple small cities.

The midwest has pretty much nothing as scenery goes.

I'm not seeing where it says the guy wanted to shoot the two guys. The title of the CP post is a lot different from what the articles is and what is stated within the article.

I also think it is just some nut trying to get a gun debate going. I doubt the incident actually happened.

Semantics. He didn't want to shoot, he wanted to threaten to shoot. Basically like JayBo on the powerplay

I don't know why but when I read that letter yesterday I pictured a Hank Hill looking guy with a Hank Hill voice.

Obviously I chose the title to mock the absurdity of the situation. I will agree that he probably fabricated (and at the very least, exaggerated) his encounter with this gentlemen to advance his own agenda. But there are plenty of cases where people with guns shoot unarmed innocent people because of a perceived but non-existent threat.

To write a letter to the editor suggesting that the outcome, which was already non-violent, would have been somehow better if he had been allowed to carry his gun suggests to me that he's the type that would shoot first and ask questions later. And add in a little bit more justification into his already exaggerated story.

Do I think that we narrowly avoided a double-murder on Nose Hill? No. But an absurd letter deserves an absurd thread title.

If he fabricated it, surely he could have come up with a more threatening line than "have you been to the Stampede yet?"

Those two lines imply he would have pulled his gun in that situation

Saw this one Twitter and I wish that I could take credit for it... a handy card to pass to people when you would not like to talk or shoot them.

I wish I could post those stats that Cowperson posted, but it won't let me for some reason.
