Sounds to me like a bar fight and the guy who got the worst of it is being considered the victim.

Not many kids this age stand a chance against Ferland.

Yes, because when players fight on the ice, there is a very strong possibility they will get into scraps away from the rink.

Anti-fighting defense force - attack level 1.

Things can get heated and move very, very fast.. it's no excuse for striking someone who's apparently trying to help a downed mate.. but it can be at least understood.

Not to de-rail.. but whatever happened with Brett Sutter? Did he actually have the charge stick?

Uhh, yeah. If he really did strike someone trying to help another victim, then I hope he has his contract terminated. If there is more to the story, and it was a fight with two willing parties, that may be different. But what the RCMP are alleging is not good at all.

Umm tough 20 year old kid who knows how to throw down and is an enforcer on the ice. I think it would be unlikely not expect him to show some of those same attributes off the ice.

I have never once said I was against fighting, it has it's place in the game. I just happen to know that if you are a 20 year old who is know as a fighter on the ice, it's likely you will be off the ice.

First because you know you are tough and will have that attitude to protect the people with you (article said he was with family) and second because when you are a known tough guy at 20 other drunk idiots will be searching you out at a bar looking for a fight.

An aggravated assault charge is a hell of a lot more serious than simply dismissing it as 'boys will be boys.' This is quite serious.

A very high percentage of bar patrons, who have been drinking heavily , end up being dickheads...especially after midnight.

Wow, stupid decision by Ferland if this is true. Be a bigger man and don't stoop to the level of fighting. As a Flames prospect you're under the microscope no matter what you do or where you are, for crissakes...

I think we should hear the full story before we go making statements like this. The Flames shouldn't want to rid a prospect of Ferland's calibre so fast. He'd be picked up in moments.

I live in Cochrane and both papers report if a cricket farts and heard nothing about this so I am going to go with not a big deal...except to the guy who got his orbital broke.

This story is gonna go nowhere.... Boys being boys.

Then again I grew up in PA during the mid 80's to early 90's so I might be dessensitized lol.

There "might" be two sides to a story.....RCMP have to lay charges some times even if they know it means nothing and also....the RCMP aren't alleging anything.

Let me re word this:

It was my understanding that police will wait for your statement before charging you with whatever it is you are allegedly being charged with?

So is this a case where they have already heard his side of the story and the Crown decided it was enough evidence to push forward with charges?

Some people forget to read when it involves a precious Flame's prospect. If this was a Canuck he'd already be raked over the coals but since it's a Flame's prospect innocent until proven guilty is the motto. He's a d-bag if the allegations are true and I hope he's a failure.

The RCMP investigate, then turn to the Crown and say "this is what we believe happened and here is our evidence." The Crown files the charges, but it is based on what the RCMP tells them.

And yes, there definitely might be two sides to the story, which is why I very clearly said that "if" Ferland is guilty of what is being alleged, he should be punted. I also said that "if" it was actually a fight with two willing participants, things change. I felt I was quite clear in expressing the conditions by which I would support terminating his contract.
