I'm pretty sure this happens in Calgary as well. Those side of the road vendors selling taber corn in June and July when I doubt the real Taber corn is even close to ready.

Queue the "I'm still a corn supporter even if I buy counterfeit corn" crowd.

Most of the time when you are purchasing "Taber Corn" from one of the road side vendors:
1) It isn't Taber Corn
2) There is a reason why one of the larger Grocery chains didn't buy it (Food Safety, standards, etc).

Only in Edmonton? This has happened in Calgary lots, that's why they started giving out certificates to the real vendors. I don't know if now those certs are also being faked by the others. But this has happened here.

Can someone explain to me how Taber corn is better than corn grown anywhere else? I certainly can't tell the difference.

It used to be seem to be the sweetest till the peaches and cream strain came out. Now all corn is so sweet I can't tell any difference.

That's cause you're buying crappy knock-off corn.
As I understand it, the soil conditions and ammount of sunlight means results in sweeter corn.
Taber corn is actually a protected label, just like Champagne, or Port.

Pure Taber corn is easier for the body to break down. You retain it's nutrients in your system. Imitation Taber corn your body just passes in your stool.
Yes, I'm totally making that up.

A good rule of thumb: If your corn has a fight strap, it's probably counterfeit.

I read that it was because of the huge amount of sunlight it gets in the day and the really cold temps it reaches at night.

I don't normally buy corn at all (Taber or otherwise). It was served to me while I was a guest at a friend's place shortly after I moved to Alberta. They were really hyping up how Taber corn is considered a local delicacy and how great it is. It didn't taste any different from any other corn I'd ever had before.

It's good to see others pointing it out, but it's ignorant to pin this on Edmonton as there is fake Taber corn all over the place. I used to know the Taber corn owner. It's a problem.

The owner of ALL Taber corn? Wow, I didn't realize it was a conglomerate.

The only time I eat corn is when I want to figure out how backed up I am. I'll eat corn and then the next time I use the bathroom I'll look for the corn in my stool. So I really don't care if it is Taber corn or not.

If the kernels are all bubbly and poorly stitched on, it's probably a fake.
