Olympic GDT - 7 August
I'm on my iPhone, but I thought I would get this going.
Whitfield just crashed and had to pull out the triathlon. It looked like he hit a curb or the barrier.
Please add any additional information about today's events. You guys have been doing a super job!

Despatie will be competing in the 3m springboard finals, at 2 pm EST (12 pm MST). Francois Imbeau-Dulac narrowly missed qualifying.

That was a pretty terrible crash. Good to hear he didn't suffer any broken bones.

Bolt just strolls through his 200m heat. This guy is simply unreal. Olympic basketball continues to be a joke. Canada loses 91-48.

I am still gutted by the soccer semi final and the officiating. I am curious if it is getting any press coverage in the UK or if the outrage will be limited to Canada.
One nice thing is that on the ESPN roundtable, one of the panelists acknowledges this "epic" game will be remembered for the officiating.

Yeah I just watched the replay again and even soccer fanatics and ex-players were commenting how that 6 second rule is never called and most can't even remember it being called ever especially at this level of play and importance.
Secondly, you see the Canadian player look away and shield her face and chest from the shot. How the hell do you do a deliberate handball when you are not evening looking at it?
Honestly, the game is over and decided but if anything that ref should be reprimanded and banned from officiating at this level ever again since if she wasn't paid off then is way too incompetent to ref at this level of play.

It is an after thought today. The GB supporters are more interested in talking about the triathlon and rightful so as the host nation with the brothers making it on the podium.
However, a lot of my co-workers who are non-American did apologize to me personally about last night's game knowing I was Canadian One called it a "bloody disgrace" and another a "total sham".

I doubt there's any press about it in the UK. Nobody cares about women's football over there.
We barely care about it here. We care about Canada, not necessarily soccer.
I think the 6 second rule is never called because professional goalies know it and release the ball quickly once it's in their hands. You often see men keepers throw the ball onto the ground or outside of their box and then kick it. It's not even an issue.
What's McLeod bouncing the ball for?
The handball call was bogus. There were no outstretched arms.

men's soccer semis today. It would be amazing if Japan won both women's and men's soccer!

I have seen men goalies hang on to it way longer giving their team time to get into position. At worst they get a warning from the ref and in extreme cases a yellow card. I have never seen a free kick given from that position due to it and read that it is basically never called anything higher than U10. Most football fans and experts seem to agree, well online anyway. Hell the American players were just as perplexed as to what was going on as the rest of us but of course will take it, who wouldn't. When the players, coaches, announcers, and fans have no idea what the hell is going on you know something is wrong.
Does it really matter who cares about it at what point? In the end few people will remember the results of any Olympics with a few exceptions. It is always in the here and now and right now I think the Canadian women's football team and fans alike have the right to be pissed off.
We already have enough sports marred by subjective judging and adding suspect refing just makes things worse. The small stuff I have no issue with, those happen all the time, but to make 2 such terrible calls within a minute resulting in a goal in a game where 3 goals is a very high scoring event is a monumental failure. There is a reason refs in the NHL put away the whistles during the playoffs. They don't want to be the one to make such a mistake. Even if it was called in the round robin play it would be passed over as a bad mistake but this was potentially a gold medal decision.

NHL refs are also pros and the best in the world. Olympic refs are hungry.
We like the Olympics but in the end, it doesn't really matter. It's a once very 4 years joyful adventure.
This isn't the Calgary Flames.
