Warning: Transit Fines $250 Starting Today

Just a warning for those who didn't see any advertising about the change. The transit officers are out in force today because today is the first day that fines go up to $250.00.

Cash grab or not if people get a ticket they only have themselves to blame...Unreal the excuses we all hear when the transit or police officers catch people without tickets or pass.

 Edit:
That being said I do find it low when there is the influx of checking on the first day of the month... But still not excuse.

I forgot the green text, if it were up to me, the fine would be double.

In my opinion, the penalty should be $500 plus a punch from the first five people who can't stand the smugness of the offender who "never buys a ticket because they never check."

There's a pretty easy way of avoiding giving the city $250 - BUY a ticket like everyone else.

Wow that would be crazy to see. I can see guys jumping across ctrain tracks and over fences to get away from the transit cops.

On the first day of school at the U of C the first year they rolled out the mandatory bus passes for students the CT security were all lined up at the university ticketing people who didn't have their sticker yet. That was a cash grab for sure. Everyone there had already paid for the bus pass but they had to get to the school to get the sticker. They had a ton of people pulled aside for tickets.

They can charge whatever they want, all its going to do is increase the fine revenue they collect. Until they actually do a better job of enforcing by actually having the transit cops checking tickets more frequently, people are still going to do it. Its been 6 months straight of riding the train for me, still only seen 1 officer. Doing the math at $2.75 a ride 40 times a month (2 rides/day), thats $660 in rides paid. If you skip paying, you have to get caught 3 times and you're still only down $90 if you do. I think a lot of people will still continue to skip on the fares because its still a worthwhile risk. Enforce it better and then I think you'd see more fare revenue collected.

Yup. Any simple cash flow analysis tells you it's cheaper to not pay.

Although with monthly passes being $94/month, you're looking at $564 in that 6 month time-period. You're down almost $200 in that scenario, getting caught 3 times.

Not that I condone such behaviour. Maybe we slap a monetary value on the embarrassment of standing there while a ticket is being drawn up?

Perhaps they should post pictures of fare evaders on the train as a public shaming.

Why don't they do what most normal cities do and install turnstyles to get on / off the train?
