For the record, I e-mailed the Flames and asked about Wilson's contract status, and I was informed that the club had terminated his contract, as per NHL regulations.

Good to know that now it's possible for Feaster to sign Ramage at the end of the year now. He'd be a pretty exciting piece to get for a playoff run for the Heat.

I think Ramage would probably be fine signing a PTO to play in the Calder Cup playoffs and his ELC beginning July 1st

With Brodie being the only two-way contract. I think if Feaster can move Babchuk he will do it otherwise I could see Brodie starting in the AHL this season even though I think he's ready for the big club and would like to see him start with the Flames this year. I can't see Bouwmeester getting moved at this point in time, it just doesn't seem like an option.

Starting D looks like:

Bouwmeester - Wideman
Giordano - Butler
Sarich - Smith
Babchuk

Brodie - minors
Carson - minors/waivers

I think Brodie stays with the big club- there is no reason what so ever he starts in the AHL. Either that, or now Brodie becomes a trade chip. I can tell by many interviews that Brodie needs to be playing with the big club and I don't think he would be very happy being back in Abby. Carson will be with Abby, he has yet to prove he can hang with the big club long term- I believe that Brodie has.

I also think that Lamb is going to step in and take up a good chunk of the offensive slack that Wilson leaves. IMO, Lamb made Wilson expendible - but time will tell of course.

The difference is that NHL players going to KHL are usually some bubble player, who don't play any important role for their NHL team (the only exception I can think of is Radulov). On the other hand, players, who are going from KHL to NHL are usually key players for their KHL teams. It would be hard to imagine Flames fighting hard to keep Wilson, however Omsk would fight hard for their franchise goalie Ramo.

The Flames are at a point where they are better off losing players for nothing, to clear more contracts.

Which tells you something about the contracts Feaster was handing out like candy. Third pairing defencemen in the AHL need NHL contracts? Really?

Wilson was probably the Heat's best defender, and he played adequately in his time up when we had injuries.

Absolutely, and its no small loss for the Heat.

Looking at their defense as it stands now, they are in trouble. They have an overabundance of forward depth, but little to no defensive depth or top end talent on the blueline to speak of.

It will be very interesting to see how Ward structures his system this upcoming season (if at all different..).

I used to think the same way until I realized how Ward structures his defense.

Ward likes simple (I mean VERY simple) defense. He doesn't care whether you're an offensive or defensive defenseman, he just cares about whether or not the d-man is solid defensively.

His team's play a simple game in their own zone where the defenseman needs to be the first one to touch the puck on a dump-in, or simply force the guy carrying the puck into the corner. It's that simple.

The point I'm getting at is, even though new guys have arrived like McKelvie and Callahan (likely lifetime AHLers), they're going to be instructed to keep it simple in their own zone regardless of whether or not there's a "big name d-man" on the team or not.
