fuel consumption?

When you're grinning ear to ear every time you drive, fuel consumption goes out the window.

You'll never make up the difference in cost versus buying used.

Yeah, it's silly to play the fuel consumption game if you're wasting money elsewhere. I saved 30k off the price of my car by buying it 4 years old instead of new (and I doubt most people would be able to tell the difference...it had 18k on it). I don't care what kind of electro hybrid solar car you're driving, you're not going to save 30k of gas over the life of that car.

Btw, I think it's ok to want a new car even if it doesnt make sense. Car decisions rarely ever make the most practical sense....we buy what we love and justify it afterwards.

Exactly. I'm going to be 45 this month. According to most teens and those in their 20s, I'm already dead, so I might as well enjoy a new car before I die...

Then eff it, get a Miata (if you like corners) or a Mustang (if you like power). You only live once.

Great idea, Table 5! And I'm being completely serious. Get something fun, Oil Killer. Leave enough in your budget for some winter tires and you could even get away with one of those cars as your only car. Hell, a base model Mustang has like 300 HP or something now, let alone the GT with over 400. The base model would likely be within your reach.

As for the Miata, having a convertible is something everybody should own at least once in their life. It's like driving a speed boat around land...truly an awesome feeling I didn't even really know about until this year. Miatas are forever out of my reach as I don't fit in them because I'm 6'4", but they seem like a great car!

Well, while I would love something like a Mustang, alas, it is not going to happen. Need something more reasonable. Some great suggestions in this thread, and I think I will look at a Juke as well as a Mazda 3. Maybe even a Dodge Journey.

James at Stadium Nissan is pretty much the most honest, no-pressure salesman you could ever deal with if you want to talk to him about your Juke.

You need a Boxster my friend!

It has more space inside than the Miata, but gives you much of the same feeling. I'm only 5'10 and the Miata felt a little too tight for me, so I can definitely see why you wouldn't fit.

Convertibles really are pretty special. I can't justify one as my main car right now, but some of the most fun I've ever had driving where in convertibles....a 95 911 in the country side of Connecticut, and some base Mustang in Hawaii. I tend to hate the way they look in comparison to their coupe counterparts, but it really is hard to beat the feeling of a vert.

Oh the fun I will have when I don't need to haul my kids around! For now, I need to stick with a convertible with a back seat. I have great memories of driving my Dad's 911 Targa around in the 90s and could definitely see myself looking at Porsches again sometime.

We looked at the Juke and settle on an Impreza hatchback sport. Essentially the same price as a Juke, both all wheel drive, but the Impreza has a lot more room and easier on the eyes IMO. They have all kinds of different models to fit your budget. The juke also has a turbo engine, which I am not a fan of, but to each their own.

Lol...

I said I would "look"...not sure about it though. Never been much of a Dodge fan.

Right now just off of looks and "pep", I'm really thinking about the Mazda 3. A little sporty but practical. OK resale value.

I usually find that the middle trim level of cars have the best value. They usually have most of the features but less of the luxuries of the top trim level (leather, navigation etc.) I would personally never buy a base model because they are usually too lacking in features and can lose their value faster than the other trim levels. Just something to keep in mind when looking within your budget.

I've heard lots of good things about the Juke and I happen to be one of the people that like it's styling. But it has a pretty small rear seat. My girlfriend who is 5'2" thought it was a bit awkward. I think it's a better choice than the Mitsubishi RVR as that has a very uncomfortable back seat. It's also gutless, I was very disappointed by the engine when I drove one.

I would look at the Subaru Impreza. Not sure if you live somewhere with snow or ice, but the full time AWD would be nice. The new models are getting pretty good reviews.

Mazda 3 is a good choice too. I have one and it's been a very good car. Practically no problems except they can have rust problems. They may have fixed it with the newer models, but I doubt it. For the category that it's in it's probably the most fun car to drive. It's the most popular small car for a reason.

Since you are coming from an SUV I would highly recommend the hatch back versions of the last two. While I like the look of a sedan (and bought one) the hatchback is much more useful. This year with a camping trip and a cabin trip my car literally isn't big enough for two adults and a small dog with all the gear.

Anyone bought a Chevy Cruze? Wouldn't mind hearing some experiences if anyone has one.

Didn't those have a problem with the wiring that caused smoke to pour out of the dash on occasion?
