Yeah, I'm not looking to buy for a few months, so this may help considerably.
Just seeing some of the experiences others have had. What I really want is the features I mentioned and about the best "dash" I can find. I like the looks of dashes that have lots of toys and look good. Not just a basic dash with gross big buttons and orange led text or no digital text at all. Usually unfortunately, it's most of the higher priced models that have cool dashes. I know it seems like a strange thing to want in a car, but it's what I would like so I'm really trying to shop as much as possible.

Funny enough we just upgraded from a 2002 Santa fe to a 2012 Dodge Journey. Really love it. Bought one used off autotrader for $22,000 fully loaded. Be patient is my advice and check frequently.

That dash is pretty nice. What vehicle is that?
I'm a little Ford wary...my wife upgraded from a 2009 Focus to a 2012 Fiesta. The Fiesta is pretty gutless and the Focus sounded and rode like a bucket of bolts after 3 years (we had bought it new).
Anyone have any experience with Mazda 3's?

I bought a Mazda 3 skyactiv GS with luxury package this spring (2012). the fuel mileage is awesome (consistently between 6 and 7 L/100km mostly city driving) after 6000km. I still love it, of course I am coming from an old corolla in which the only thing auto was the transmission. my Mazda has an auto transmission with the tiptronic shifting. I have it all decked out, only thing. I would love to have had (and couldn't with this model) is dual climate control. of course the model I got you couldn't get new under 20k, it's too bad you don't have great credit, as the 0% is nice. It has some good kick to it and the dashboard is well laid out, nice features such as auto windshield wipers etc. I got the hatchback and have enjoyed it. my only complaint is sometimes going from reverse to drive and quickly hitting the acceleration it seems to jump a gear or something, could be because its new and I am used to a 20 year old car. otherwise it shifts quite smooth (6 gear transmission).

if you've been looking, you might already know of this site, but I'll mention anyways. A good place to compare features and prices (US dollars and models)
http://www.edmunds.com/
for a decent Canadian site
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/globe-drive/new-cars/
also, 2013 models should be out soon, so you might find a good deal on new 2012s. You might even find the odd new 2011 if the car market has been cool in Calgary/Canada

I'm pretty sure Ford also offers a discount for Costco member. $1000 bucks or something like that.

My car is from Maclin, pre-owned Lexus. They have been great to me and were throughout the process. Worked to get me a lower finance rate and knocked over a grand off the asking price for the vehicle, also got a set of snow tires in with it. Good experience.

the base Nissan Altima has a USD MSRP of $21330, and an invoice of $20500. Its a 4 cylinder, 180HP, which is about 40 HP more than your 2002 Santa Fe (assuming you have the 4 cylinder model). NAV will add about $1500.
Minus the NAV, and depending on your negotiating skills, you should be able to get close to invoice. According to Edmunds, people have purchased this car in my area for $20100
(numbers are from Edmunds)

Thanks. I'll check it out. My Santa Fe is the 6 cylinder model so it's pretty damn peppy, but I like the sounds of an Altima. Edit: Looks a little pricier here in Canada. Base is 23k and then it jumps quite a bit if you want wheels and doors ;-)

Qualifying for 0% is no different then most of traditional lender arms of dealer financing (at least what I've seen). So, if you cannot qualify for 0% (which often times is a scam anyways), then you are likely high risk credit and will have payments over $500 a month for a $22,000.00 loan.
Unless you are financing more then 5 years which is a whole different conversation.

Well, I didn't want to make this thread about my credit rating, but odds are I am looking at more than 5 years.

Honestly dude, buy used. It sounds like it would be a poor financial decision for you to buy new.

IMO the best financial move would be to not buy any new vehicle if the current one works, save money, and work on fixing credit situation with debtors.
I know that's not why this thread was created, but it is clearly the best option for OilKiller.
