Avenue Magazine Best Calgary Hoods 2012
http://www.avenuecalgary.com/article...bourhoods-2012
In a blow to us inner-city elitists the results from this survey picks a whole bunch of suburban communities.
I will be sobbing into my latte tonight about Sunnyside's lowly 20th place finish (behind Cranston? Shoot me now.).
1) Varsity
2) Arbour Lake
3) Bowness
4) Haysboro
5) Fairview

To do that, we turn to our readers with a survey that asks you to tell us what is most important in a neighbourhood that people want to move into and stay for awhile.
The survey says low crime, good commute times and pedestrian-friendliness are highly desirable. Calgarians want their neighbours to be friendly and the homes along their streets to be well maintained.
We care more about playgrounds and recreation facilities than we do large yards and low density. While we don’t necessarily need to live near family or friends, we do want access to pubs, restaurants and coffee shops where we can meet them.
And we love good value, which means keeping a keen eye on neighbourhoods where property values are on the rise.
Once readers determined the criteria of “best,” Leger Marketing got to work crunching the numbers, using hard data from the City of Calgary in areas such as property assessments, crime stats and access to amenities, and weighing those with reader rankings on friendliness and other factors.
The calculations led to this year’s list of the 25 best neighbourhoods in the city.

Debate! Discuss! Turn this into another "inner-city versus suburbs thread", and make sure to tell us how Airdrie and Okotoks are better than all of these communities with a 10 minute commute to boot!

Haysboro in at #4! Hoo-ah!
The fact that Bowness ranked at #3 shows that this list is a whole lotta BS.

#3 Bowness? Not that I wouldn't live there, but I don't see how it makes the top 3 places in Calgary to live unless "ugly highway corridor with oodles of dirty parking lots" is one of the top criteria along with "unkempt yards".

This seems more like darts thrown at a map of Calgary than based on any sort of reasonable criteria.
They state criteria that people thought were important, but the actual list belies them.

That list is brutal, and I grew up in Varsity and still spend lot's of time up there at my Parent's house.
Bowness ahead of Mission? Mt. Royal? Sunnyside? Even communities like Lakeside or Elboya kick ass.
There is opinion, and then there is being out to lunch.

Boy you know that list is a joke when somehow Southwood makes the top 10. Having worked in the area for a few years, not entire sure what makes it so great. Badass Jacks?

Sunnyside was #4 in 2010 iirc. Now we are #20. I blame it on Druh Farrell personally. Maybe we should have put the Peace Bridge over Arbour Lake

Terrible list.
Even if you ignore the stated criteria about what defines a great neighbourhood (because the people who created the list certainly did), how is Mission not on the list? And how is Hillhurst below Beltline? I live in the Beltline, but I'll be the first to acknowledge that both Mission and Hillhurst/Kensington/Sunnyside offer superior inner-city living.

Also, they really should have divided this into two separate articles: best suburban neighbourhoods and best inner-city neighbourhoods. I will never live in the suburbs, so I'm only interested in how the various inner-city communities stack up. I imagine that most suburbanites feel the same way but in reverse.

I have nothing against Arbour Lake but there is no way it's #2. The lake itself is a joke and the rest of the community really doesn't have anything that the surrounding communites like Hawkwood, Royal Oak, Citadel, Hamptons have.
I actually like Bowness and spend a bit of time there (buddy lives there) but IMO it can't be that high because it's not an ideal place to bring up a family compared to a lot of communities. My wife taught at the elementary school and there are a lot of deadbeat parents and shady people in that community compared to a lot of Calgary communities.

Who would live in Haysboro, over Hillhurst, given the choice? Come on.

It looks to me like cost was a factor, a number of the less expensive neighbourhoods had "low taxes" as one of the pros.
All things being equal, most people pick Hillhurst, but they're not all equal, they're about 3x as much money...
