Looks like Hayden made the 100m sprint final. Good for him!

Man i totally miss Steve Armitage and the guy with the glasses for swimming. I can't even watch CTV's coverage with Rod Smith and Girl Swimmer.

Wow another blown lead for an American man, this time Phelps, costs him the gold in the 200 Butterfly. Ties the record but after 8 gold medals in Beijing, he might be gunning for 7 silvers this time.

Actually my math was backwards... a NZ wins (which they are doing right now) ensures they play the USA.

Canada will play either GB or Brazil.

Yep, I said it in the other thread, but I think there is definitely a sense of drama and showmanship missing from the CTV coverage in comparison to what we had with CBC. There's no cool little documentaries that help build context, the presentation feels boring, and the main announcers seem to know as much about the sport as we do.

Well thankfully this will probably be CTVs last Olympics, as the CBC/Bell bid is supposedly the heavy favorite to broadcast 2014 and 2016.

I thought they did a great job for the 2010 Winter Olypmics. I find it much less organized for the summer.

The winter games are much easier, there only at most 2 events going on at the same time. At the summer game, there could be 15. CBC always did a great job of juggling around coverage to show Canadian in contention.

CBC would be like "hey.. there's a Canadian in the fencing Quarters, send so and so over there and if they make it further, we'll send it over to you"

Doesn't Bell own CTV?

Yes. Also I'm fairly certain that Bell and CBC have (for the time being) withdrawn their joint bid because the IOC wanted too much money.

That's fair. I know I've had a problem following with online streams and I've had an impossible time figuring out when and in what events Canadians are competing.

What Cecil said. Bell owns CTV, who in turn owns TSN and all the other little sports channels (Sportsnet, OLN, etc.)

Last I heard was they removed their bid because like Cecil said the IOC wanted too much money. As it stands right now we have no coverage for Sochi 2014.

Problem is the IOC want the same high price whether there are NHLers there or not.
CBC is like f-u we're playing that much if there are no NHLers.

Indeed Bell does own CTV, however I would imagine the CBC would not be involved if they were not going to be the main carrier of the Games, as they themselves attempted to bid on 2010 and 2012 but were outbid. My guess is CBC would carry major live events and I think Bell would be primarily committing TSN and TSN2 to the games, similar to how they did for the 2006 and 2008 Games. To date there have been no details released about their bid, however.

As to the too much money part, well the IOC will take any bid over $0, so as the Games draw nearer they will undoubatably lower their price. The IOC motto is of course "Some money beats no money", or something to that effect.

Well not SN, not sure about OLN. SN is owned by Rogers who definitely aren't Bell.

This Olympics is a joint bid but I'm guessing Rogers only put up a small portion of the money and explains why it seems that SN gets all the second rate stuff to cover.

As per the discussion wherever else this came up, the thought goes that the IOC is actually mad that CBC and Bell made a joint bid because since there is no competition there is nothing driving up the price.

And not having an official carrier doesn't mean no coverage, it just means that we get the international feed. Was it Mango that was filling us in how that works? Someone seemed to understand how it works if you don't have an official carrier.
