pleasant surprise.

I don't follow any ncaa hockey, though did keep tabs a bit on BC last year for the obvious reasons. How is the providence program, and how does jankowski fit in as a freshman?

Depends.

Looking at the Friars roster from last year I don't see all that many seniors, if Providence College gives the icetime based at least in part on seniority then he might be better served going to the USHL where he'd get lot's of icetime.

Then again it is a higher level so he'd be testing himself against higher competition. Which has been the knock on him thus far (that he's untested against quality comp).

Tough Call.

If memory serves, the Providence team is really weak. Jankowski and Gillies could see a lot of ice time.

yeah, they aren't a really strong team ... they are not exactly stacked with NHL drafted players or college stars and should be a young team going forward. FWIW they finished 7th out of 10 in the Hockey-East division last year. I remember the Friars coach saying that they expect Gillies to be their no 1 guy right away.

yes, Providence and Boston College are both in the Hockey-East division. They play each other three times - once in February and twice in March.

Yeah, I was totally fine with him doing a year in the USHL but the way he looked among his peers at Flames camp two weeks ago makes me think he isn't behind other players like everyone (myself included) thought. I think most thought he would go to camp and show some skill but not be as polished as guys his own age.

From all reports he was one of the best forwards at camp along with Sven and Gaudreau. He's ready for College IMO, and probably isn't such the far-away project we all think.

This is all speculation but it is likely that his impressive showing at the Flames prospect camp caused the Flames to have a discussion with Jankowski, and Providence about what they thought was the best way for Jankowski to develop.

It is likely Providence promised him he will start off with top 6 ice time if he commits to go there this season, and the camp probably showed to everybody he was ready to handle that ice time.

Jankowski attended the Flames prospect camp earlier this month along with a handful of Providence recruits, who helped sway him to school.

TH sports ‏@THsportsfeed
The original plan called for Jankowski to spend a year in Dubuque to develop before heading to Providence College.
Yea, that. Sorry, I was on my phone and just saw it on twitter. Thanks for backing me up sureLoss.

Playing less games should allow him more time to hit the weight room and bulk up I would think. One of the big things he needs is to add to his slight frame as he's a bean pole right now.

The best way for him to develop is to play as much as possible in the best league possible.

The weight will come. I was 6'2, 150 when I was his age. Now I'm 22 and have naturally put on 20 pounds, with the same body fat %, while remaining 6'2.

6'2 170 lb is still a bean pole in most cases.

He's apparently 6'2 170 already, so if he gains 20 pounds he's in great NHL shape. I don't think he'll ever be like Thornton.

6'4, about 210-215 pounds is what I think/hope we'll see.

I just looked up Providence's roster and they don't look like a strong team so Jankowski could defiantly be one of their top 2 centers. Also i think Gillies and him are the only NHL draftees playing their next season. Could be good for both of them.

6'275 was what I read... given that he's 17 I imagine he could have another inch or so of growth left in him. The important think is putting on muscle and gaining his adult strength. I imagine he's been given a nutrician guide and exercise training regime by the Flames at Dev. camp and I imagine that will be encouraged by the people at Providence.
