An appeal to help a rescue dog
As some of you may be aware from this thread, I'm involved with Alberta Bulldog Rescue.
One of our the fosters in our care injured himself very badly last night.
Here are the details from our president.
Quote:
BLUE needs you! Our big boy jumped off something and broke his shoulder late last night. Because of the location and type of fracture we only have 2 options: 1 - amputate his front leg. 2 - Raise funds and send him to an orthopaedist for a very expensive ($3000) surgery. WE have 1 day to make a decision. If you can help cover Blues vet bills we can try our best to save his leg!!
|

Blue came to us a puppy from a breeder because he is deaf.
If you can donate anything at all it would be greatly appreciated.

I can't help but think $3000 could help the world in more important ways than going toward this surgery. I wish the dog the best, though. If it comes to amputation hopefully he receives very good care.

You're always more than welcome to donate $3000 and help the world in any way you please.

That's not the point of this thread.

I don't know, definitely wasn't me.
You come into a thread which is asking for help to save a dog and you say the money could be better spent on something better.
The only solution would be for you to come up with $3000 and donate it to what you think is a greater cause and the people who want to help out the OP will do the same.

I totally understand the plea and think the little guy deserves the real fix; but amputation is still major surgery and would likely cost quite a pretty penny itself. But hey, leaving that fact out likely makes it easier to raise funds, which I suppose is the intended purpose.

We were quoted 3-5000 for the reconstructive surgery. The amputation route would have been is about a third of that. Because bulldogs carry most of the weight on the front legs, amputation would mean his other leg taking a great deal of stress, likely meaning other surgeries down the road or possibly shortening his life span.
As the treasurer of ABR I can tell you we don't normally raise a significant amount of money. We have 3 other dogs in care who will be going for spaying and neutering soon. We have the funds to cover those types of things.
Most of our donations usually come in the form of products (leashes, beds, food, etc.) or of time (driving, home checks, deliveries).

Read this epic tale and see if you can find your "humanity" by the end: http://www.latimes.com/news/nationwo...,1193566.story
You can't solve all the problems in the world but you can solve a few once in a while. Generally, I'd rather solve an animal problem than a human one.
I actually dealt with a situation similar to Bulldog Blue about eight years ago. A momma cat and her six kittens. Long story short, after abuse in the pet store and my wife collecting them all and bringing them home, we had one day to decide on euthanasia for the momma or have BOTH her back feet amputated.
So, I had known this cat only one day and I was looking at a $1,600 bill. We went ahead with the amputation process and afterwards, without being asked, the surgeons at Western Veterinary donated their time, cutting the bill in half.
Polly resides in our home today, clumping along. Like most animals, she has adapted well to her handicap. Unlike humans, they don't carry around the emotional baggage. They adjust and get on with it. Polly only goes outside with human supervision but caught four incompetent mice in an hour a few weeks ago. Our previous Golden Retrievers and the current two are all afraid of her.
Good luck to Blue!!!
Intrepid Polly, back legs but no back feet, lucky to be alive and not afraid of much . . . . .

If it was a dog that is owned by a family that has sentimental memories attached to it I could maybe see spending $3k on it. It's kind of an ugly dog and nobody owns it so I don't get why random strangers would spend that cash on it. There are 1000's of healthy dogs that get put down or remain in the humane society. Just my opinion.

I actually was looking at Blue on pet finder....and I believe he was not adoptable due to him being deaf? Or maybe he needs special care? All I know is that he is not ugly and I am more then happy to give some $$ to see a creature that has been given a rough start in life get a 2nd chance.

Well thankfully the rescuers of this world don't see "cute" or "ugly"; they simply see creatures in need. In Blue's case, he is under 5 months old and still figuring out a world without sound.

Blue was surrendered by a breeder due to his being deaf. Deaf dogs can lead very fulfilling lives, they just have special needs when it comes to training. For example he has a collar that vibrates. The vibration is simply to get his attention and then he will respond to hand signals. He has been in training for a few weeks now.
Many of our rescues stay in foster homes until their initial issues are resolved. For some that is a short time, for others like Rowdy, (the one I'm fostering) it can be months before they are ready for adoption.
Thank you to everyone who has donated and spread the word.
Here is most recent update.
Update BLUE ~ A huge thank you to Dr Anderson and the staff at McKnight 24 Hour Veterinary Hospital!! Blue is enjoying some major pain killers and remains under their care. Dr Anderson found us an osteopathic vet who will most likely be able to take care of Blue this coming week but the price was higher than expected. Thank you to all who have donated (and those that are still donating!) we could not have gone down the "save the leg" path without you.
