Default So if I go the us this weekend and buy a car...

How does it work with the warranty on new cars?

Any experiences?

Looking at explorers or durangos

Depends which dealers in Canada want to honour the warranty. Some may not want to. That being said if its a major problem with the car, you can throw it on a flatbed down to Great Falls (assuming from Calgary).

In B.C. this works great with Bellingham - only three hours and change from the Okanagan.

Hopefully if you're buying a new car this weekend in the US you already have the paperwork sent in to the border. They like to have it 72 hours in advance.

All the vehicles I have brought up from the US have been out of warranty, but it really does depend on the manufacturer...

And don't be surprised to get poor service from a Canadian dealer on your import...

My dad bought a 05 CTS-V from the states 4-5 years ago and had no problem with the warranty transferring into Canada. Just had to get a few extra forms filled out at the dealership, and I think may have had to take into into a dealership in Calgary when he got back so they could certify it or something.

I went though that link yesterday and aside from the paper in advance it wasn't too bad, at least at the border.

Yeah, it takes a while to get all this done, it's not an impulsive weekend type of thing. You definitely need to plan ahead as there is quite a bit of paperwork.

If i were you'd I'd start calling out to dealerships down south and start seeing what you can get price wise first.

You also have to find a dealership which will sell to someone with a Canadian address. Lots of major manufacturers in the US have been threatened with license loss if they sell to Canadians.

A lot will not. Some dealerships do have a brokerage thing that they do (sell it to a 3rd party who sells to you).

totally dependent on manufacturer. some void the warranty. Others just don't give service up here. Others treat it like a Canadian warranty. I also would not trust the internet for something so major. Read the written contract before you sign and confirm with dealerships on both sides of the border as all as checking the website.

Chrysler does NOT honor the warranty if you buy form the US. Ford looks like it does though.

One other very important thing to think about is duty. If you buy a car that was built in North America, you don't have to pay duty on the car (which is 6.1%, so obviously it makes a big difference). Keep in mind that lots of foreign brands build cars in NA these days, so you don't have to stick to the Big 3 necessarily.

But I have to say going from the CX-5 to the Durango? WTF happened?

From what I gather, that listing is well out of date, as VW no longer honors US warranties; (2008 and before it did).

I've found this one to be the best listing (I too have been looking at importing recently)

Three things happend:

1) I'm not entirely comfortable physically in the CX 5. It's ok, but the Durango was much more comfortable for me physically sitting in the seats. I hit my knees on the CX 5 and Mitsubishi Outlander every time I get in the vehicle, which is not fun.

2) The mileage a 2011 or newer durango gets is better than what a 2005 or 2006 Ford Focus gets because of the new technology. WAYYYYYYYY worse than the CX 5 though. In fact all the 2011 or newer SUVs we looked at have equal to or better mileage than our mini van, which we are ok with. That's sort of my threshold in terms of fuel economy.

3) Tried to buy the mitsubishi and the deal when I went in and kicked tires was actually WAY better than the deal they put on the paper, on the same model I kicked the tires on. On Friday, they weren't willing to go back to the deal they offered on the previous Sunday, which pissed me off and I walked.

Not sure what you're looking for as far as space or third row ability, but take a look at the GM trio of crossovers. Enclave, Acadia or Traverse. They have a regular 3rd row, and more space overall (and cargo behind 2nd or 3rd row) than a Tahoe, let alone a Durango.

You should also be able to get a good local deal, they are doing a minor styling refresh for 2013 so the 2012's will look out of place in the next couple months. Because you can get FWD or AWD, and load them up or keep them low, prices can swing 20k...but its the same engine across all option levels.

Obviously, you sit a bit lower in these then, and gas mileage and towing are about the same as Durango.
