Racier City? New race-track proposed near Airdrie.
Finally a parasite community can bring something good to the table!
http://www.calgaryherald.com/news/ca...782/story.html
Still just a pipe dream perhaps, but this would be pretty welcome. We really need something to replace Race City....not only because it would be a positive draw for the racing/car community, but to ensure a safe venue for people to try out their cars at speed (you know, instead of racing on the streets).

Great idea, especially since it will only be 10 minutes from downtown.

Can't wait for this, if it becomes a reality.
Was big into the track day scene in Ontario for several years in my mid to late 20's while living in Ontario (Shannonville, Cayuga and Mosport, which were all 4 hours, 1.5 hours and 2.5 hours away respectively).
Having a nice track 5 minutes away (I live in Airdrie) will definitely motivate me to replenish my garage with a new motorcycle... I just hope there's a big enough Motorcycle track day scene in Alberta to make 2-wheeled track days worthwhile.
Brett McCormack is from this end of the country, so there must be lots of talent around here itching for a local track.

The amount of horsepower on the streets of Calgary is a good sign that there would be a market for this thing. if it's only for weekend autocross/track day types.
Hopefully they take a pass on an oval, and instead build a nice road course that could be worthy of some international events at some point.

I know there's a market for it for cars... which I am interested in from a spectator standpoint, but if I am ever to actual enjoy using it myself, there'd need to be enough interest to have the odd motorcycle track day (and I don't mean drag racing... I hate that garbage, as well as ovals).
Can't imagine them skipping on an oval, considering the redneck demographic in the 'parasite' communities.
Hopefully the graphic they chose for their website is indicative of their primary interest in a world class road circuit:

I don't see why there wouldn't be room for motorcycles. We're still a relatively small metro, so I would think they'd try get as many fans/users on board as possible.

CTV news reports that the 27 million dollar facility would include multiple race tracks and potentially an airstrip. Now that would be sweet!

Airdrie already has a small airport, and with the proximity to the very busy YYC it could be extremely limited in what could handle.

Also, FWIW, the circuit of the americas being built in Austin cost approximately $400mil. So this will be a pretty small racetrack project, whatever it ends up being.

There would certainly have to be a motorcycle track. Calgary has a huge bike community and is a hub for motorcycles in the prairies (proximity to mountains, many shops). Race City always had excellent support from the bike community, even though the track was in pretty rough shape.
I think that the new motorsport park would be a modest long-term success, certainly worth pursuing. Do some promotions, hold some events, and the race fans and gearheads will come.

Considering all the tracks in Eastern Canada are all hours from civilization, for track junkies in Calgary, Airdrie will suddenly feel like a quick trip to the airport (which it basically is).
I want more news to seep out in this... I'd like to get involved in whatever capacity possible, thru volunteering, community support, etc. I only work 3.5 days a week, so I'd have lots of free time to lend to something I'm actually excited about.

For entertainment, the CrossIron Mills is located near a horse race track and will have a NASCAR go kart racing track, billiards and a bowling alley.
CrossIron Mills will incorporate a Race Track and Racing Entertainment Centre, operated by the United Horsemen of Alberta (UHA). The state-of-the-art horse racing facility will include a gaming parlour featuring slot machines, a buffet dining room and a simulcast room with an entertainment stage area. The entertainment stage area will hold racing events, musical performances, dancing, dining and a modern clubhouse with exceptional views of two premier racecourses – a one-mile thoroughbred track and a seven-furlong standardbred track.

Sorry, but United Horsemen of Alberta has been trying to build in in Balzac years before CrossIron Mills started, and they still don't have the money to put a track up. I will very much believe it when I see it.
I would love to see motorsports back in Calgary, but am a bit skeptical about the scope of the project as reported. In particular, I really think that a road course is something to do as a Phase 2 or 3. Build a good oval track, and maybe a drag quarter mile, and then take it from there. A great example would be Auto Clearing Motor Speedway in Saskatoon from the oval side.

As far as I know, private investment is paying for this. I think the airport code will be YDX.
