You're American (and from your location, the heartland) so I don't expect you to like or agree with me trashing elements of your country. But maybe when you consider every other country in the free world feels just about the same, maybe its Americans who got it wrong and not everyone else? Again I'm not against guns, but I think if strict controls were in place this insane man would never have access to guns.

Hans Zimmer has released a charity song for the victims.
http://music-mix.ew.com/2012/07/27/h...-knight-rises/
As Zimmer said on his personal Facebook profile, “ ‘Aurora’ is dedicated to those who lost their lives and were affected by the tragedy in Aurora, Colorado. I recorded this song in London in the days following the tragedy as a heartfelt tribute to the victims and their families. 100% of the proceeds will be donated to Aurora Victim Relief organization. The track is available on iTunes shortly and you can donate here: http://bitly.com/QmUiWM.”
And, as the “Aurora” composition’s webpage itself says, “This song was recorded in London following the tragedy as a heartfelt tribute to the victims and their families. 100% of the proceeds will be donated to Aurora Victim Relief organization through GivingFirst.org.”

My location might be the heartland, but I am not from here. I'm from 60 miles south of our shared border. I love my country, it is not perfect. I love Canada, my wife spent the first 17 years of her life there...I have 3 Canadian nephews and a Canadian brother in law...., it is also not perfect.
I have no ill will toward Canadians or Canada. I see a LOT of ill will spewed around here toward Americans and the USA in general. I don't understand where it comes from.

Come on, you don't know where it comes from? America still calls itself the greatest country in world, when a substantial amount of facts clearly show it isn't. America is arrogant, though admitedly not as arrogant since Iraq. Not saying all Americans think that way, but there is still a very strong contigent of people who think so.
For the record it saddens me to watch America fall deeper and deeper. I love America as a country and what it stood for at one point, but it doesn't stand for much anymore.

Everyone calls their country the greatest country on earth. It's rhetoric and it always has been.
I don't know why that gets under people's skin so much.
I mean, hockey is my game too but I don't get all upset because you guys claim it for yourselves!

Its mostly the loudmouths of America, who disparaged other countries (mostly European countries), that bring the bad name to the general populace. Yeah screw those Europeans and their higher quality of life, better health care and better education...huh? Perhaps if those blowhards were a bit more respectful, people wouldn't feel as strongly.
It also doesn't help continuously electing officials who act against the general populace's best interest in favour of corporate interests and lobbying groups best interests. Lobbying is truly the downfall of America. Which to bring a roundabout back to the topic at hand, no one has the balls to go up against the NRA, so gun rights will likely never change from their current status.

I just feel bad for America. My mom has lived down there for 12 years, I love going to visit her but to have a country that has had the same reoccurring problem (gun violence) for so many years and do absolutely nothing about it is the very definition of insanity. If anyone ever wants to get rid of guns there is always a flimsy reason (in my opinion) that is put forward to keep the access the exact same as it has always been. It is tougher to get fireworks in the States than it is to get a handgun. You cannot take a snow globe on an airplane yet you can pretty much grab a gun whenever and wherever you want.

Would he have found as effective a way? Despite you being sure it is far from a sure thing.
There aren't many lethal weaponry that can do as much damage as was done in that amount of time as guns. Sure he could have made a bomb and bombed the theatre but that isn't really the same as what he did.

I'm not too sure what's worse, the ease of access people have to these guns or the fact that if you get shot by some lunatic you are stuck with the hospital bills. Land of the free indeed. So many things with just this one case that makes me proud not to be an American.

Is the only answer limiting gun owners rights?
Why not solve poverty issues? America needs jobs. Why not take the guns away from those who are not legally suppose to have them? It is working in New York city. Why not deal with border crime? Place some US army unites on that border with the firepower to respond when shot at. Who cares if Mexico doesn't like it? Why not stop politicians from writing illegal gun laws so the NRA can use more of their resources in training people to use firearms safely and ethically? Why not examine and improve the system in which the mentally ill are identified and assisted?
There is alot the government can do to make America safer without taking peoples rights away.

Just curious what loudmouths you are referring to.
Continuously electing those officials happens because 99% of all political candidates in this country fit that description.
I'm not as hopeless on gun control mainly because there are many responsible gun owners who do not share the NRA's all or nothing mentaility on gun control. There is hope.

I pretty sure Canada has that law as well.

Yes, that is what the Zimmerman trial is going to hinge on. There are a lot of states that have that law. Stand your ground is what it is commonly known as.

In Canada, your belief that your life is threatened must be objectively reasonable. Also, you are only permitted to use as much force as is reasonable in the circumstances to defend yourself.

Do I really have to name the blowhards? You know who the usual suspects are, namely right-wing commentators, so I could probably post about 50 if you'd like. America has everything in place to be the greatest country in the world, they simply choose to waste money in all the wrong places and refuse to leave the two-party system that basically ensures corruption. I guess if we want to continue this discussion the political thread is probably the way to go there.
As to the NRA, thats nice that you and other people don't like them, but you surely recognize the immense power and influence they wield, and how no Republican candidate will ever get elected if he's for stiffer gun regulations (goodbye voting base) and the Democrats have consistently proven to have no balls. I just don't see it personally.

You don't have to do anything. I was just curious. But if you judge Americans based on Rush Limbaugh or Shawn Hannity's existence I think that is a problem.

P.S. Too bad he didn't blow his tool off.
