Default Best Steak place in Calgary?

Going for a steak dinner on Sunday with the family for a birthday dinner.

Just wondering what the best steak place would be in Calgary... and nothing too high-priced. Preferably in a "normal" steak price range.

I live in the South as well, so the closer the better.

Anyone try the Chop Steakhouse by Chinook?

Been to chop and it is alright.

My thoughts are:

The keg
Smugglers
The cattle baron

Chop is good. I really like Chop.

If your near Sundance you can also try the Cattle Baron.

Smugs is where it's always been, but it's not as good as it used to be.

EDIT: No to the Keg. It is to steak what Red Lobster is to seafood. (well not that bad, but not great)

I liked Vintage the one time I went. I figure anywhere where they bring out the cut and explain to you before cooking it is good.

Chop is a poor substitute to the Keg as a chain steak restaurant. Would not recommend it myself.

Best steak I've had in Calgary is at the Ranche in Fish Creek Park. It is not in your "normal" steak price range however. I haven't been to Smuggler's Inn in a while, but I know it used to make a great prime rib and I'm sure the steaks are great there and more reasonable in price.

^^^ Never heard of the Ranche. It's yum?

EDIT: and yeah Vintage is great, but I was thinking south. If you wanna go downtown, that is a great option.

The Ranche is suburb. They call it Rocky Mountain cuisine, so they always have wild game on the menu, and bison items and caribou and such. It's in a 100 year old house that was owned by William Hull.

Love wild game. I was lucky enough to eat it when I was young. Our family didn't have much money, but my uncle always gave us fresh meat. Grew up with that stronger flavour.

With that thread title being what it is, I'm going to ignore the OPs affordable request...

Not affordable: I took a date to Ruths Chris a couple weeks ago, great steak. $250 tab with drinks.

A little more affordable: The best steak I have had personally, Caesars.

More affordable: Steaks at Fergus and Bix are good, as are the steaks at Red Water Grill.

Honestly, Cactus Club makes a pretty good steak surprisingly. I know, I know, but it really is good, especially the blackened creole one.

Cattle Baron in the north has always been good but I haven't been to the one in the south.

The Willow Park Caesar's is awesome but probably a little more on the expensive side.

I've always found The Keg to be pretty solid. Nothing spectacular but I've never had a massive failure of a meal there.

The steak I had at Redwater on Macleod one time was pretty decent. Nice place, too. There's a really nice one in Aspen.

Vintage and Notable are tops. Nothing beats them. And if you're ok paying $27-30 a steak at The Keg, might as well pay $32-36 a steak at Notable or Vintage instead and make sure you're getting the best.

I really like Wellington's. A bit more expensive then the Keg, about Caesar's pricing.

Ruth's Chris is good too, but overpriced.

Vintage for sure. I also really enjoyed Charcut and Notable.

Surprised at the Ruth's Chris mentions. Seriously? Fried Steak? It was not great and horribly over-priced.

Is Hy's any good still?
There is one in Toronto I was going to go to for my birthday since it reminds me of Calgary

Caesar's is good (but pricey). Have never been to Chop.

Go to Mercato. It's on 4th St. It's not a "steak place"... but trust me. It's awesome. Best steak I've had in a looooooong time.
