Well the reason Loubardias got let go was the same reason you want Griffiths gone. A lot of people thought Loubardias was a terrible PBP man. There was even once a news column from out east describing him as unlistenable. I don't want to bring in a debate about Loubardias but the fact is that the audience spoke with Loubardias and he got canned. As long as Griffith's has his job you are obviously in the minority as far as Rogers is concerned.

And how do you know that Griffith's isn't a kind hearted man?

And that one article got Loubardias fired.

However, I bet if we did a poll of Flames fans about who was a better PBP guy, Loubardias would win over Kerr in a landslide.

Not everyone is going to like a particular commentator, but I do know the vast majority of people prefer Loubo over Kerr, and to that extent, Kerr as host over Griffiths.

I'm pretty sure it wasn't an article but a single sentence that mentioned it in passing that Loubo was unlistenable.

It was in either the Globe or National Post Sun and it was one of the idiots from The Reporters on TSN. The bald guy IIRC. He was commenting on PBP guys and mentioned that the Flames guy was unlistenable.

But that's not why he was fired. Hell the guy works for a rival network, of course he was gonna be less than flattering.

Loubo got fired because...well I don't think anyone really knows. The station was going in a different direction or maybe they'd received complaints or who knows what.

EDIT: ok assuming you're not referring to that loser who did actually petition to have Loubo fired, you meant the article below. If you were referring to the loser who petitioned SN then it definitely wasn't him that got Loubo fired. He was just some random troll that hated Loubo.

There was an actual article posted by the moron Steve Simmons but like I said, it was just a mention in passing and it wasn't even an article on PBP it was just a this and that section:

Quote:
"There isn’t much best to say about the Maple Leafs, but the more I watch my NHL package of games on cable, the more convinced I am that Joe Bowen is the best local play-by-play man in hockey. By now, I believe I’ve heard them all, from the very sound Ken Daniels in Detroit to the excitable Rick Jeanneret in Buffalo to the unlistenable (hit the mute button) voice of the Calgary Flames, to so many nameless vanilla American announcers whose cadence of the game seems absolutely lacking."

http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Hockey/NHL.../17084481.html

Also, notice that he's calling the Holy Mackinaw guy the best in the biz, and this bit was at the bottom of a Leafs article. The holy mackinaw guy is one of the worst, not one of the best.

Yeah pretty sure that was just a moron pandering to the Leafs audience, not the reason Loubardias was fired.

I don't think Kerr is very good but I didn't think Loubardias was that great either and truth is the only thing the switch has accomplished is that Flames PBP went from mediocre to slightly more mediocre. If Rogers views Kerr as poor his time will likely come as well.

There is no doubt that Kerr was steller in his old position but the fact is he got promoted so arguing how much worse Griffiths is pointless as Kerr isn't going to quit his PBP job to go back just to appease fans.

Heck I'm listening to Loubardias right now on the Fan and like Kerr he's a lot better doing talk radio than PBP. In a perfect world the afternoons would be a Kerr/Loubardias tandem but that's fantasy and too smart a move for Rogers to make. Bottom line is that Rogers needs to up it's talent level in the broadcast booth as Kerr and Loubardias are the solution to talk radio not PBP where they are both miscast.

Again when did I ever say this was the reason he was fired? I simply made that as a documented example that his voice was a turnoff for many.

Well obviously Rogers and others (there are people on record here that never liked him) thought Loubardias was bad and the consensus here seems to be that Kerr isn't very good so I would say it's pretty accurate. Notice I was being kind (compared to most) by using the word 'Medocre'.

Well I guess I'm boycotting the fan afternoon show until they get rid of Bryn. That's the only thing to be done really. I recommend anyone who feels strongly should do the same.

Having that couple weeks of Kerr just proved how intolerable Bryn is. Kerr raises the level of conservation like Elliot Friedman does or Loubo does. Bryn drags the conversation down into the muck adding pointless comments and asking stupid questions.

Who said you did? You did however reference the article I posted and I was simply pointing out that it was barely mentioned in passing. So that article probably had nothing to do with him geting fired.

However Ashasx did claim the article got him fired and I disagree. It didn't even specify him by name.

Calgary hasn't had exciting play by play since Whalen.

I'm not able to remember. After Ed Whalen, who was the TV PBP guy? I don't remember anything between Whalen and Millions.

Not 100% sure but I think the answer to your question is nobody.

When Ed retired it was the last season of Flames on 2/7. Mike Toth did a few games to finnish out the season.

After that it was kind of a dead zone for a few seasons where we would get the odd Flames game on TSN or HNIC but we didn't have a regular Flames PBP guy. I think Don Wittman was doing all of the western Canada HNIC and I forget who the main TSN guy was. Hughson maybe? We didn't get Flames games regularly until SNwest came around.

If I'm not mistaken I think Kevin Quinn actually did it for a year or two before he moved over to the Oilers telecasts. Beyond that I'm not sure.

I wonder how long the contract was that Bryn got? You have to think there is no way it gets renewed

After they left 2&7 they did a year or two on RDTV. Grant Pollock did play-by-play.

So it goes:

Ed Whalen
Grant Pollock
Mike Toth
Kevin Quinn
Bruce Buchanan
(Someone here I'm forgetting?)
Roger Millions
Peter Loubardias
Rob Kerr

Wow, so much for my jaded memory! I don't remember Grant Pollock doing PBP at all. What channel was RDS? I was a student and rockin the rabbit ears back then so maybe that is why I don't remember. I think Eds' last year was 98 or 99. BTW is Mike Toth still working? Mike and Mike on sports@11 were awesome together.

Kevin Quinn started out as the Flames play-by-play guy and Buchanan was with the Oilers. Then after a couple seasons, the two switched. I don't think Buchanan lasted very long, which makes me think I'm missing someone between Buchanan and Millions.

I don't thnk Bryn has to lose his job. But he needs an edge (strong opinions here and there) and more prep to support himself.

He demurs to Steinberg too much.

Ultimately someone he reports to should be helping him with this stuff.

Brynn just neds to move to an off air position. He's a pretty agreeable guy, so he could probably work on the sales side. My guess is that 960 doesn't have the budget to carry salary or pay severance, so he'll likely finish out his contract and move to the next gig. From what I've heard on air, I don't even think his wife moved to Calgary so he's probably buying time until he finds his next job in Edmonton anyway. I thinks that's the typical life in radio anyways.
