I realize this is a polarizing situation, but LZ Granderson did a solid job describing the feelings of those of us who fall somewhere between ESPN's "Legacy Untainted" and the posters in this thread's "burn in Hell."

Oh I'm well aware, Sandusky has even a worse place in hell if there is such a thing.

He might as well have. Either way a kid was getting raped weather it was his dick or his best bud sanduskys while he turned a blind eye. Are you not guilty of murder if you enable someone to commit the act of murder under your direct supervision and don't report it to the police. I am no law expert but I believe you are.

Joe Paterno was to Jerry Sandusky what the Pope has been for Catholic priests as far as sticking one's dick where it doesn't belong.

I don't buy this at all. For one thing, child abuse isn't exclusive to the 21st century. There is no way he had just "can't understand the concept".
The guy played and coached football for 70 years -- he had heard, if not seen, everything imaginable. Lord only knows what all those jocks were doing to each other in the name of "hazing" over seven decades.
Now maybe, as an old codger, he didn't understand the ramifications of such a crime (no doubt it was swept under the rug when he was a kid) but he couldn't have not understood this happens and is wrong.
And not to put too fine a point on it, or derail this thread entirely, but he was an Italian American who grew up in Brooklyn. My guess is he has an allegiance to a particular church that has significant experience in these matters.

No, you're not. I understand the enmity, but I find that Paterno has been receiving an unfair amount of blame while Sandusky is skating by relatively unscathed. The guy is a hypocrite, not a rapist.
Is Sandusky even in jail?

Sandusky will undoubtedly end up in jail for the rest of his, soon to be short painfull life, no doubt with all the anal sex he can handle and much he can't.
I think the emnity that Paterno and the school are getting is because they should have known better, Sandusky is a sick **** that is going to jail due to his inability to know right from wrong, the others are supposed to be normal and do the right thing.

If your enabling it it's really as bad. That's how predators work, through people and societies that turn blind eyes. There's no excuse for not doing the right thing here. Lives were ruined and abuse not only allowed to continue, but to flourish (for lack of a better word)
I think the big thing is how much did Paterno really know? I would agree it's unfair to crucify him without knowing all the facts. The only thing is we probably won't know all the facts, and it looks about as bad as it could be, so I don't blame people who want to make the connection. It really does look like a cover up through many levels, and it really does look like he could have been heavily involved if not at the center of it.
And yeah, accessory to crime is a pretty big thing. I agree it's not exactly the same, but it carries pretty stiff punishments too.

I wonder if Paterno was so determined to hold on to the job because he knew he only had a few months left?

Sandusky labeled 'likely pedophile' in 1998 report
Quote:
More than a decade before former Penn State coach Jerry Sandusky was charged with more than 50 counts of child sex abuse, a psychologist warned university police that his actions fit that of a “likely pedophile’s pattern.”
|
Quote:
Chambers was the psychologist for a then-11- year-old boy, who had met Sandusky through his Second Mile charity for troubled children and was later invited by the defensive coordinator to several Penn State football games. The boy is now known as Victim 6—one of 10 allegedly molested by Sandusky and one of the key figures in the criminal case against him slated to go to trial this spring.
|
Quote:
After meeting with her client in her office and talking to his mother, Chambers described in her written report how Sandusky had coaxed the boy into the shower after a workout, telling him, “All the guys do.” He then moved closer to him, squeezing him tightly from behind while they were both naked. The boy also told Chambers how, during their workout, Sandusky had kissed him on the forehead and told him, ‘I love you.” He also invited the boy back to his house to “sit on his lap” and go “online” on his “cool computer,” the boy’s mother told Chambers, recounting her conversation with her son the previous night.
|
Quote:
“My consultants agree that the incidents meet all of our definitions, based on experience and education, of a likely pedophile’s pattern of building trust and gradual introduction of physical touch, within a context of a ‘loving,’ ‘special’ relationship,” Chambers wrote in her report.
|
Quote:
“One colleague, who has contact with the Second Mile, confirms that Mr. Sandusky is reasonably intelligent and thus, could hardly have failed to understand the way his behavior would be interpreted, if known,” Chambers continued. “His position at the Second Mile and his interest in abused boys would suggest that he was likely to have had knowledge with regard to child abuse and might even recognize this behavior as a typical pedophile ‘overture.’”

And there is going to be a press conference tomorrow with an announcement that unprecedented sanctions will be placed against the University's football program by the NCAA. No link, it was on the radio this am.

They've already said it won't be the death penalty, so I'm not sure where the unprecedented part will be.

Ya, if it's not at least to the standard of the death penalty don't see how it'll be unprecedented.
That's what the program should get though. This is an actual serious crime.

I found an obscure website reporting the story
http://www.cnn.com/2012/07/22/us/pen...html?hpt=hp_t1
It seems this source believes that Penn State would actually prefer the death penalty to what is going to happen.

One theory floating is something along the lines of a five-year ban on scholarships, bowl appearances and TV exposure. I would imagine something like that would effectively cripple the football program for a decade or more and cost the school millions.
