From today's Herald.
Homeowners and bylaw officers trapped and killed 37 rats in Acadia in the last week and are on guard against more rodents that may be burrowed in back-alley garbage.
Garbage collection in the neighbourhood is on hold as bylaw officers rummage through the trash to ensure rats aren't taken to the city's landfill site where they could breed.
They don't know how the rats got there, but they have some theories.
McIver said the release of rats into the neighbourhood "appears to be a deliberate, destructive act."
Hmmmmmmm.......I wonder if Bin Laden has a good alibi
I guess I should include a LINK
The link is good, the Herald server has been up and down in the last hour or so so keep trying.

"A pair of Norway rats could produce 15,000 offspring in a year."
Wow, and I thought bunnies went to town.

I hate to say it, but this is what you get for having by-laws that don't allow cats to be outside... rats wouldn't last very long if Acadia had its fair share of cats.
Time to say to Calgary, Cats or Rats... pick one.

Just goes to show how clean of a city we live in. When news of a couple rats, hits major news headlines, you know we have it good. There are very few cities in North America as large as ours that can be called rat free. For many cities, rats are just as common as people. We can be proud that don't live in a rat infested city, and that Calgary is actually getting rid of the rodents!
Here's a suggestion, I think we should ship off all our rats to Tampa, that way they can fit in with their cousin Mr.Rat look-a-like Brad Richards!

Alberta is the only rat-free region in the world, so there would be no cities as large as ours that can be rat free
I forget which premier it was, but they decided to make Alberta rat free because they caused a lot of damage to crops, so now there's rat-hunters ensuring that there's no rats in the province. And it's been working.
I heard on CBC radio today that one measure they take for this is when getting grain from other regions, they have "rat filters" when putting them in the elevators and such.

The though of a neighborhood banding together and smushing rats with shovels and 2x4's provoked an image of 'Whacking Day' in my mind....

When I was in Edinburgh I was told that, statistically, one is never more than two metres away from the nearest rat in Britain's major cities. We have it good in Calgary. But why am I not surprised the rats popped in Acadia?
BTW, I first heard the news in a cab here in Kingston. This is national news.

By far the animal that freaks me out the most are rats. I hate them so much. Actually I hate muskrats the most. Frickin' swimming rats! I hate an "incident" with one when I was like 8.
