I own firearms, and use the safety. All of them are hunting rifles or shotguns. Should I be punished because somebody went insane? I don't think that's fair.
I'm not sure how you can prevent something like this, but I do know that more education and gun safety courses can prevent a lot of accidents. But a rampage? I'm not so sure. This guy was a med student. You don't get there without being smart.

I think the problem in the US is not that every citizen has access to guns, its that every citizen damn near has a gun, what seperates most developed countries from the US is that even though their citizens have access to guns, they have to jump through enough hoops and the process is onerous enough to deter any one that doesn't have a specific need to have one, this doesn't stop the occasional wack job from popping off such as in Norway or Dumblaine, but in the rest of the world it is rare that a nut job has access as they do tend to get weeded out or just give up, it also has the added effect that by lowering the level of casual ownership it makes the whole idea less alluring when someone is breaking from reality, these kind of incidents tend to grow on each other, one wacko pops off and 5 other borderline wackos watch and think 'wow thats a good idea'.
The US is also tremendously affected by the lack of general access to healthcare as it is generally these border line personality nutters that get picked up here for muttering to themselves or storing urine in the basement, here they get dropped into a less than perfect but at least functioing system that treats and tracks them.

Are you really asking us to weigh the value of your hobby, shooting firearms at paper targets, against the value of the thousands of lives that are lost every year to firearm violence?

Right, and in the States they have access to highly efficient killing machines, with which they can very rapidly kill and wound a theatre full of people.
That's kind of the point here, not an education on the differences between handguns and assault rifles.

Im not sure it is even that assualt weapons are more deadly, its that they attract people to own them that shouldn't have them, they are the pit bull of guns, a pit bull isn't and worse or better than any other breed in the right hands, its just the mystic of it attracts complete morons to own them for no better reason than it makes them look tough, same with assault guns, they are bugger all good for anything outside the military therefore the desire to own one, purely because it looks 'well hard' should automatically prove the applicant is a moron and shouldn't have a gun.

Yes...I am. Better take away my motorcycle too! And you can't use stats if they aren't accurate, Canada does not have thousands of lives lost to firearms violence every year. In fact firearms violence accounts for nearly the least amount of deaths of all violence inclusively. Don't throw out big numbers for emotional value on your argument.

Listen. There are 3 kinds of firearms. Pistols, rifles, and shotguns. That's it. Please stop using a media propaganda coined term to make something seem scary....

I seem to be the only person here who has real functional knowledge of firearms here, and you're upset because I'm contesting the emotional bleating and nonsense arguments against firearms ownership? Give your head a shake!

I'd like to thank both the staunch anti gun and hardcore pro gun members here for enlightening all of us here to the real issue at hand: pissing contests between your respective groups about gun control. Thank you for your sensitivity, tact an overall compassion in the wake of this horrible tragedy.
If anyone wants actual updates on this story google 9news Denver or go to Denverpost.com
Sorry, carry on.

For the record, I held a membership to a local firing range for 3 years. I still go from time to time.

And within those kinds of firearms are other subsets, like automatic, semi-automatic, pump action, air compressed etc...

Another approach to play devils advocate on the gun issue...what if all lethal type bullets and ammunition was banned to all those who dont need to potentially kill someone or something in self defense. Hunters may have an issue obviously so maybe you regulate their ammunition in a certain way. Everyone else can stick to rubber bullets, pellet guns and paint ball. I know this is probably not all that simple, but its another approach.

It's probably because you're coming off as an insensitive jerk who would rather preserve his hobby than protect innocent lives. And, before you go off all half-cocked, I am also an insensitive jerk. However, I know when to pick my battles.

Subset of rifle. Fully automatic action rifle would be appropriate.
