Thumbs down Passing to the untalented: Do you do it?

I play in various ball hockey leagues around Calgary, and a certain disagreement came up recently.

I was playing wing, and as I went to the net with the ball, a few defenders closed in on me. I passed it back to the point man, which fumbled the ball badly, (I promise, it wasn't a $#!++¥ pass - it was tape to tape.) and in their poor recovery, ended up giving the ball away to an opposing player for a breakaway. End result, minus 1 for everyone on my team.

One of my buddies came up and said I should have known better. He said because the guy was so new, I should've just dumped it back in and cycle. I told him that in hockey, passing back to the point for a clear shot is more than likely, the correct play.

I disagreed with his suggestion strongly. I would make that same play 99 times out of 100, as I think the only way your teammates are going to improve is if they get these sorts of opportunities. If you only play with good players, and only pass to the good players, it may help the team win now, but the other players get competent slower than they would if they made mistakes.

What do you think? It's not like this was an important tournament or anything. It was a casual ball hockey night. But even if it were a league game, I still don't think you should not pass to certain people just because they don't have the skills.

People only get better through the experience of trying and watching other people around them. Both...not just one.

Edit: I like how Rathji put it the best.

Are you playing to win, or have fun?

How can a player ever improve, if never given a chance?

Unless you are making money at it, there is no reason you should ever take it into consideration. Of course, I say this as the guy who would always drop the pass on the football field, or miss the net by a mile in hockey, so I could be biased.

If skill level is a factor, perhaps that should be considered before the person gets onto the team. Once they are on the team though, they should be treated as capable.

If it's a casual game, I go out of my way to pass to beginner players.

If it's a "competitive" rec league game, I won't not pass it to beginner players, but I may be more inclined to shoot instead of pass on a 2 on 1.

I made a couple sweet passes to Slava last night. End result, no goals.
Next week. I’m gonna shoot.

This is why I bailed on rec sports in spite of being a decent enough player, too many people take things way too seriously.

To me the look on that players face when he finally makes the play is worth a few mistakes along the way.

I was totally kidding about my previous post.
A couple summers ago I played with two newbies on my line. One of the most frustrating ball hockey seasons I’ve ever played. I shot alot but I also passed to them alot. They would either flub the pass, shoot it wide or get a weak shot on goal. But when one of the guys finally scored and the raw emotion he showed, I was happier for him than I was for any of the goals I scored that season. My stats definitely looked like a Cy Young winner that season

I think you did the right thing. Keep everyone involved, be a good team mate and make the smart plays.

Growing up, my brother and I never got to play any organized form of hockey so at age 29 I decided to give it a shot. Joined a div E3 team in a non-contact league and it was alright. I wasn't the best on the team, but I made the odd play, tried hard, got a decent point total in my games played and usually went out for a beer and some laughs after which is more than a lot of the guys contributed. I ended up quitting the team because of schedule conflicts, but I can tell you that there were two kinds of vocal guys on the team. Those who supported the rookies like me and actually did what they could to make the team improve by coaching me and giving me the chances to learn, and those who took winning super serious and did the opposite. I can also tell you one of the negative guys was the captain and would bench the crappy guys like me in situations where we were on special teams, or move us down together onto one "crap guy" line and would completely limit our icetime. That pissed me off the most - at least I was giving effort. If you care that much about winning don't put guys on the ice that just coast and don't even have a drop of sweat on their brow when they take their equipment off, and then bench the guys who are working hard at the game and improving their play. That treatment made it pretty easy to overlook the guys who went out of their way to help and just let my other committments take priority.

So yeah, cheers on making the play. If buddy wants to win the world ball hockey championship, maybe he can take the player who flubbed the pass to a parking lot and practice with him on his own time.

There is no I in team. If that person is on the team there is no reason to exclude them because their skill level may be less.

Hate D*uchebags like that, it's no wonder I never got passed to and yes I am emotionally scarred from it...stupid fat kid who couldn't run getting picked over me.

I have no idea what's going on in that league. I've hit posts, crossbars and last night even had one go off the knob of the goalies stick! I'm just snake bitten.

I think in general though you should make the pass, regardless of whether the player sucks or not. Helping other players is more fun for everyone.

If you don't pass to the less talented players, they themselves are less inclined to pass when they finally get the ball, and then you've got untalented ball hogs. Nobody wins.

Rec ball hockey is serious business. Sure everyone likes to win but the winning is all the sweeter when your WHOLE team is in on the action. Gotta pass.

To that end, ball hockey is such a fast game that I don't think I'd have the mental capacity to make that judgement in the middle of a game. I just pass to the dude that's open otherwise the play is going pear shaped.

I pass to anyone open. The quality of pass matters, as does luck, but everyone has to go to work the next day do lets just have fun

Your rec team had a captain? did he where the "C" to? What a joke. "Adult Rec League" I beleive the title is pretty self explanitory. The most important things are 1) excercise, 2) beer, 3) getting away from the wife/ house for a bit. You can't just keep the "crappy" players around to collect their fees.

I was mediocore on my rec team, I remember when got my first composite stick. Two of the defensemen would pass to me a lot, and really hard, then we'd all laugh because I couldn't catch a pass with that thing for a long time. We just had a really good group of guys. That is what it comes down to.

crappy guy will always be crappy - says me, the crappy guy........aanywyas, if I am wide open and someone opts not to pass to me, then I can accept that, because I know what type of player I am......

the reality is, that the next day after the game, you still have to go to work - winning does not change that. you will not be signing a 13 year contract and there will be no parade.
