The study is comparing net worth which is assets minus liabilities so mortgage debt would cancel that value of your house.
Although, I imagine that home values has a lot to do with number though.

Our home values haven't nose-dived to the same extent as the Americans. Easy explanation.

Well I do find that because of the value of our dollar right now, the US is provides good value as a vacation destination. Just basic things like food and clothing in particular seems really cheap there right now compared to what we pay in Canada.

Certainly housing values in Canada do impact this...but again the article claims that Canadians on average have 4 times the equity in our real estate holdings. Mind you if my mortgage interest could be written off...I would probably keep it borrowed out, and if I used it to make good investments, I could be really well off. If I used it to buy more stuff, which a lot of people like to do...I would be in really bad shape. Essentially our system in Canada tends to force a lot of people into paying off their houses. Unless it's a revenue property, there really is no way to make the borrowed part of your mortgage interest free....even to use the Smith manoevre, you still have to build equity into your house to get an interest break.

I love how in the comments section everyone in the US simply blames Obama. Classic.

This. I'd bet the unmorgaged houses in Canada have held their value much better than the US counterparts.

It is so sad reading the constant stream of idiocy in those comments sections.

Nothing but angry, poorly expressed blame.

Is it that much different than someone like Harper looking to take all the credit for why Canada hasn't suffered the same fate?

Politics is a game of here and now for a lot of the public even though the current economic situation is something created by the administration prior to Obama. Much like Harper has been helped by policies of previous governments in Canada, and high resource prices.

Republicans aren't exactly the brightest bunch of people. If they were a political party in Canada they wouldn't even get 2% of the vote.

They need to start fake wars again to jumpstart the economy!

Harper hate or love wouldn't make every single comment, though. That was what I was trying to point out. I can understand if it makes up 20%, 40%, even 80% of the comments. Not every one.

How far down does it go? I mean, they're sorted by Facebook "Likes" of the comment. I didn't look past the first set of comments so I'm not sure about the 100%

A similar thing happens with Canadian struggles on CBC...most, if not all, the "Top" comments are anti-Harper with an extremely positive vote count.

I would say though there are some similarities, there are also some very important differences.

Stephen Harper has been PM since 2006. So basically he was PM for 2 years before the big economic problems of 2008. Not only that, but let's not forget that the PM has a lot more direct control over goverment policies than the President does.

Obama on the other hand only became president in Januray of 2009, after the big problems started to surface, and while the president certanily has a lot of power when it comes to directing government policy, he has no where near the direct control of the legislative branch that a Canadian PM does.

So blaming the guy who didn't assume power until the recession was underway, and who has no power to directly create legislation for the problems his country is facing, is actually quite a bit different than praising a guy who was in power 2 years prior to the recession, and has direct legislative control, for his country's success.

Certainly Obama isn't free of blame, and Harper isn't the sole reason for their countries respective problems and successes, but their roles in creating them and navigating them have been quite different.

our housing prices are higher because we have the 'jobs' to support / justify the higher pricing.

it makes sense to me that Canadians are wealthier than americans.

what does America have going for it?

we have an abundance of natural resources and a sound banking system.

americans are lazy.

canadians are lazy, but have jobs if we want them.
