Default Best Auto Insurance?

Hey all,

I'm looking at getting a brand new car within the next few days and I have been exploring my options for auto insurance. I currently get my insurance through Brokerlink/Intact and for this new vehicle, I got a quote at 4600/year. I figured that may have been a little high, so I went on the TD website to get a quote from them and I came away at ~3000/year.

Do policies from different companies usually differ that much? I guess I should provide a few details. I am 20 years old, had my license for ~2 years and have been insured for ~18 months. The car I'm looking at buying is a 2012 Scion XB.

Thanks in advance, everyone!

The prices certainly will but the actual coverage? No, not really. Some companies may have some slightly different bells & whistles but at the end of the day, full cover is full cover. Your are obviously leasing or financing and will require liability, collision and fire & theft. Every company has exaclty the same thing.

Doesn't matter who you buy your policy through, they all will screw you in the end......

Also, make sure you don't make anything up to get a better rate. I know of some people who get coverage from companies like Meloche Monnex saying they are some kind of professional when they are not.

They will sell you a policy, but if you have a major claim you can bet they will look into your application to see if there is a reason to deny your claim.

Checked that out, it was around 4k/year. So I'm thinking that the TD quote may be a bit off, it seemed pretty low.

What's the best deductible to have? It does make the insurance cheaper, but is it worth it to have a higher deductible?

A higher deductible will reduce your rate but usually not enough to make it worth your time. Standard ded on collision is $500, fire & theft $250. You can ask whomever you speak to to quote the coll @ $500 and say $1500 and see what kind of difference it makes. Probably not all that much. Maybe $120 or so would be my guess.

Never hurts to get a few quotes, I prefer dealing with a smaller company personally.

Had good experience with Hopper Insurance, Brenda or Stephanie 403-237-7070

I use Dyck Insurance.

My broker was Kelsey, very friendly and helpful young lady. She beat everyone else's rates by a couple hundred bucks for me- ended up through Aviva.

You could try: http://www.kanetix.ca/alberta-car-insurance-canada

You enter your info and it gives you rates from a bunch of places. It might not be the best though as Meloche Monnex wasn't on there and it beat them all by a few hundred for me.

I would explore, http://actioninsurancegroup.com/

it's a recommendation but with a caveat.

My insurance was much cheaper (20-30% less) with them after I switched from TD Meloche.

TD's service was much better for me than with Action Insurance. Mostly because Action Insurance is locally run and their hours are 9am-5pm. (sometimes hard to get a hold of somebody)

Not sure how pricing will be for you compared to me (older than 25, married driver) but doesn't hurt to get a quote.

On another note, I thought Meloche was different than TD insurance in that you had to be a professional or a graduate?

I use Desjardin insurance. I am 22, driving/insured for 3 years and have a 'new' 2011 vehicle. They were the cheapest insurance by far. I even spent $600 to cancel my insurance with Canadian Direct and I still saved money in the long run.

I don't think you do. I know I get a minor discount for doing various technical courses through SAIT, but I'm pretty sure the discount is just the cherry on top of already really good rates.

I know Meloche is owned by TD, but I don't know if TD has it's own insurance company as well. If you (OP) got your TD quote through their website, I think you should take 15 minutes and call Meloche anyway. You'll actually talk to someone, and they'll give you a quote over the phone. It's always cheaper. Always. Like, I've sent a good two dozen people there, and they always tell me that they're getting way better rates than they were with their old company.

You also get discounts for multi vehicle, home or renters insurance, and probably for other stuff if you bundle it.

If Meloche still gives you a quote for three grand, then I think you might be in that bracket for some reason that you've not said (not that I would expect you to say, of course).
