Apolgoies if this have been covered already. Anyone go to the final show last night at the Grand Stand? Not sure if they have been doing the same show all week but oh my good lord, the first 10-20 minutes of that show was torture. Then they haul out that flash mob lady who starts running around the stage yelling MONKEY MONKEY MONKEY!! SINGLE!! DOUBLE!! YOU GUYS ARE AWESOME!! GREAT JOB!!
WTF was that crap? This is the 100 year anniversary and they are parading around crap like that? Thankfully it got much better when Paul took the stage and some of the older "young Canadians" started doing famous female country singer songs was great but holy crap. Dance music/neon costumes? What does that have to do with the Stampede?
I was expecting much better than that.

I always love the calling card of someone who obviously just found this discussion on google.

I always wonder why trolls do this (re: Go Flames). If you're trying to "fit in" and not be noticed as someone who signed up just to troll, at least take notice that it isn't standard practice for members to end their posts with "go flames!" everytime they say something.

There is a live chat/debate covering "should chuckwagon racing be banned?" on the Calgary Herald site, starting right now. Looks like both sides are well represented.

So, do we continue to rally against the next chuckwagon event in Bonnyville in a new thread, this one, or do we just forget about it until next years Stampede?

Oh god, the flashmob lady scared us away within the first 5 minutes. We had every intention of sticking around for at least part of the grandstand show on Thursday night but as soon as the flashmob lady came out and started showing the crowd how to move their hands left to right we were out.
I've seen the Grandstand show once before and I don't recall it being that cheesy/childish the first time. Yeah it was a little on the vanilla/family time side before, but not quite that opening of "hey kids! Do you know what a flashmob is?!?!"

Sorry, but how is that link a great take on anything?
It comes off as if written by an angry pre-teen who has just learned a new swear word. The writer has the apprehension level of Springs1.

That flash mob lady was horrible. I kept telling my wife that she was acting all crazy and nuts. She didn’t think so. I talked to a buddy of mine the next day and him and his friends all left because she was such a wack job.

In light of what I'm hearing about "flash mob lady" I'm glad I didn't pay scalper prices to see the grandstand show this year. The only thing that grinds my gears more than 'G' rated entertainment has got to be flash mobs. Combining the two together probably would have had me racing for the exits and into the Western Oasis wine gardens within 2 minutes.

People were paying scalper prices for the grandstand show? Thank goodness for free tix!
But despite the crazy lady, the rest of the show was pretty outstanding

The thing that really bugged me is that it wasn't even a fataing flashmob at all. It was on stage, in front of a paying audience, with a scheduled time, a choreographed routine along with the full participation & endorsement from the venue.
Everything about it was basically the exact opposite of a 'flash mob', they may as well have run out on stage in some bird costumes and declared "the grandstand show is now a twitter! Social Media everyone! Don't forget the youtubez!"

The rest of the Grandstand show was pretty spectacular, and quite worth sticking around to see. So good, in fact, that I had totally forgotten about the crazy flash mob idiocy to start it off.
Who knew preteen chinese girls riding bicycles could be so entertaining in a G rated way!?

Agreed on the "flash mob" - they seemed to not get what an actual flash mob is. (And that craze is overdone anyway).
While I enjoyed parts of the grandstand show, particularly Paul Brandt and the Aboriginal dancers, what bugs me about the show is that they try so hard to be everything for everyone - "We need hip hop! We need country! We need oldies! We need acrobatics!" - that in the end, there's little to no cohesion. So by the end it just seems like a jumbled mess.

Sure, all races should be banned, since occasionally deaths occur. Including ones in which human athletes participate, like skiing and luge.

Did anyone go to Snoop on Sunday? Wonder how it was. Picturing poser cowboys in Western wear raising the roof to Gin n' Juice makes me smile.

Sorry if this has already been posted, but after the parade I was wondering who the Jesus fanatics in medieval garb were right before the beginning of the parade as it seemed that they were uninvited guests.
It turns out that they were parade crashers, and the nutty attention whore street preacher Art Pawlowski and his followers were behind it. I said it at the time on the form here, but something just didn't seem right about them.
Here's a link to a Sun article by Platt about it. I feel dirty giving them the web traffic. Even more so giving the attention to the crazies as that's what they want. But in this case I fully agree with him and the Alderman Diane Colley-Urquhart.
http://www.calgarysun.com/2012/07/12...tampede-parade
It creates a sticky situation for the city and organizers though - freedom of speech is one thing, but is allowing any unauthorized guest to march in the parade to preach setting a precedent for others to follow? So next year can I ride a unicorn and sing the praises of (insert deity here)? Or should it have been cuffs and batons?
