Bayless brings the intensity on defense, but his tunnel-vision on offense is really frustrating. Given that the second unit should be about developing the young guys and teaching them to play in a team offense, I'd much rather have Calderon working with JV, Ross, Davis, and J. Johnson. Not to mention that Calderon is the more valuable trade asset. I really appreciated the effort level that Bayless brought though.

Put me in the keep Calderon over Bayless camp.

Bayless on offense was too predictable. The Toronto equivalent of Carmelo Anthony

Aaron Gray resigned with Toronto for two more years.

Gray is a good depth signing.

he's too much of a stiff for me, lowry is great on pushing the pace so i would've rather gotten a more mobile center. but i guess he gives us some size

Larry Fields a raptor don't know much about the guy....how does the NBA work in terms of offers to RFA's is it the same as the NHL?

Big difference is in the NBA, the original team gets no compensation, picks or otherwise. If you don't match, you lose the guy for nothing.

Any team can offer an RFA an offer sheet and the original team has the right to match. However, under the new CBA, there's something called a 'poison pill' provision, where a team can extend an offer sheet in which the third year can spike significantly. (In the case of Landry Fields, the first two years are around 5 million, the third year is about 9 million). The crazy thing about this is that the team making the offer sheet can average out the cost over the entire length of the contract (Toronto can average out Fields to 6.3), but for the original team, they can't average them out for cap purposes. Lin, for example, received an offer sheet of 15 million. If the Knicks matched the offer sheets for Fields and Lin, they'd pay 24 million for those two guys in the third year of their contracts.

This is the first option where the poison pill provision has been available, but it really seems like it's going to be heavily used to pry young RFAs away from top-heavy teams.

RAPTORS TRADE JOHNSON TO KINGS FOR 2014 SECOND-ROUND PICK

I guess they're clearing minutes for Fields and Klezla at the 3. I actually like Johnson and thought he brought good energy and defense. Supposedly Casey had issues with him and he's the man in charge. Not great asset management trading a 1st rounder for a guy only to get a 2nd a year later.

Fields at least has upside. JJ to me has peaked and then there are the issues he seems to have with both the Bulls and the Raptors. Bayless too I think had peaked and was not worth a new contract. Heck they are still going to stink so might as well have upside guys at as many positions as possible.

Reports on Johnson were:

Will show inconsistency for stretches and get mistake-prone on offense, coughing up the ball and taking ill-advised shots. Needs to develop some go-to moves and shots to get the most out of his above-average tools. Has butted heads with coaching in the past.

The James Johnson trade is probably the 2nd worst trade in Raptors history. Still couldn't tell you why they thought he was worth a first round pick.

Raptors re-sign Centre Aaron Gray and sign Point Guard John Lucas III.

Appropriate that the Raptors home opener next season is on Halloween night. They can dress up like a real NBA team with no qualms.
