TELUS Optik TV Thread

So is this the thread where I ask Telus, Shaw or Bell?

I'm on Bell, but the houemate (finace) and I need to share the TV more equitably. This would require getting a second PVR for the bedroom (we both hate watching TV in bedroom), that said, then you just need to have two PVR schedules. So we were looking at service providers that offer you something like Record in one room and watch at any TV. I know shaw does this, don't know about Telus or Bell. Bell in it's current form (the hardware I own) can't. But maybe they have new stuff?

Worse procedure ever to go through. I hate picking this stuff.

That said, I'm on shaw for my internet. So savings could be had.

For TV service I think the fewer TV's you have TELUS is the way to go. Optik has amazing features and great picture quality. But if you have more than 2 TV's I wouldn't go with it, even on 3 HD streams.

If you have multiple TV's, 3 or more, I'd go with satellite. TELUS/Bell are the same service so if you have TELUS home phone or internet go with them. If not Bell is the main carrier and ya, might as well go with them. I guess. I dunno.

Shaw is good in so far that they have fast internet but to me their TV is only good if you have 3 or more TV sets and can't get satellite. Too many glitches and little bugs.

If you and your housemate each want a separate PVR that are private, dont go with TELUS. If you don't care if you watch each others shows, then optik is very interesting in that way.

As it is now I'm with Bell. So to get another PVR would be a few hundred. Then we'd have two PVR's and have to have schedules on both TVs. So to suddenly trade TV watching areas if I said "your show is annoying, go upstairs" and she didn't have it recorded upstairs we're hooped.

What it seems the Shaw as, and from your reply Telus too, is the ability to watch TV anywhere that's been recorded on one box.

That sounds vastly superior to ANYTHING I saw on the Bell site (or that I have with Bell).

Not to mention with Shaw the cost of buying the box and two remote or other boxes plus my current internet is the same on a month by month basis as my current internet plus my Bell package that includes no hardware (I bought it two years ago).

i wouldn't go satellite if you had multiple tv's at all. for each tv you would need a separate line up to the satellite dish as a line can only have 1 stream in it. satellite is pretty much only good for one TV, if you have multiple tv's and only one line to the satellite dish, means you have to watch the same program on both TV's.

This is 100% false.

Once routed into your house Bell is no different than Telus or Shaw and uses coax. I think you can get something like 6 signals from one router type dealio that they place at the incoming line from the dish.

The only difference, and it's been a while since I was on Bell, is that Bell doesn't currently have linked boxes like Shaw and Telus do that allow you to watch the same recorded program on multiple TVs. Each Bell box is totally independent of each other.

This is correct. I've got one dish, two boxes, and watch whatever we like. However, onlly one is a PVR so we're looking at expanding or switching. So I guess I'm stuck between shaw and telus.

just switched phone, internet and tv to telus from shaw. My install is on the 17th. shaw was just too shady to continue with.

Did not last a year with telus, switching back to shaw. I have no idea how we get charged 270 a month. I've called telus multiple times got rid of channels etc still huge bills.

k well i guess bell is different, a coworker has shaw satellite (direct?) and it works the way i described.

it doesnt.

all cable in the house that feeds your TV's requires a source. with satellite the source is the dish. so every box requires a line that goes to that dish.

if you have cable the source is your utility panel typically, shaw enters your home thru there.

if you have telus the source is your telus router if you use cat5/6 cable. i havent seen how a setup works yet on coaxial.

Well you kind of misrepresented how it actually functions tho. Installers will ensure each tv gets its own line.

I have a telus installer coming on tuesday for optik tv, internet and phone. I've been with shaw for about 11 years, is there anything i should know about switching services/or the installation process? Can i slip the installer a $50 and prolong my free movie channel trials?

I just realized that logging into my Telus router (Actiontec, I believe), passes the password as plain text in the URL. So, anybody that gets hold of my browser history has admin access to my home network. Cool.

Does Telus have other routers that can be used? I don't even need wireless...

Not really - it's highly unlikely the router exposes its management interface on a publicly facing address. They'd need to be on your internal network, and if they were, it hardly matters since I don't know of any routers that only accept configuration over a SSL secured (https) interface anyways.

Even if all that's true I don't think it makes passing admin passwords as URL querystrings any less bush league.

I'm in the same boat. Exactly what do you need to return? Obviously the cable boxes. Does the router need to be returned as well? Cables?
