Wow, I did not know that AHCNow covers mid-wives.....can't say that I am impressed that the took away coverage for chiro treatments and added midwives.......

Again, don't let that post above scare you. midwife <> home birth.
Yes, they are 2 different things, but the major majority of home birth's have midwives delivering. Also, my wife works with peds/neonates and says very rarely nowadays does a midwife ever deliver in-hospital. So these 2 things are very inter-related.

Our plan is to go to a birthing centre near the foothills. I said no to a home birth.

Is that the Arbour birthing centre? When with the midwives we booked it, a great setup and I think it would have been a great place to give birth. Plus close to the Foothills should you need to get there fast.

Yeah, I think that's the name of it.

"The Birthing Centre" sounds like something out of a dystopian sci fi movie.

I can't speak for other peoples experiences, but my wife was referred to the Maternity Care Clinic for both pregnancies, and both times it was great. All female doctor team that does a really great job. There is always one of the five doctors in the team that is at the hospital, so there is no worry about calling a specific doctor to the hospital to meet you.

It just happened by chance that the same doctor delivered both of our kids.

I think there are similar setups in other areas of the city too, ours was in Beddington.

They need to change the name from "midwife" to birthing consultant.

The word "midwife" conjures up images of living with multiple wives in the 18th century.

Not that theres anything wrong with that......

After our first child, my wife went a watched a movie called "The Orgasmic Birth". Yeah, I'm not kidding, apparently some people manage to pull that off while giving birth. Needless to say I was not interested in watching it, that's probably the kind of stuff that scars you for life.

So true, that is an image that takes a long time to get out of your head.

I recently watched the documentary called The Business of Being Born, it is interesting in that it shows you how some modern day midwives actually work......very informative movie!

Doula (I think still not covered by AHC), midwife, whatever help you can get that makes the new Mom comfortable is great.
Also for those outside of Calgary - sometimes a midwife or even a Doula is less necessary, as in smaller centers, the Dr. you see for your pre-natal care is the Dr. who will deliver the baby - so you get that familiarity anyway.
We had a great experience in Olds with a Doula and a team of experts.
