I think it's been well established Stephen Harper is a huge Leafs fan, but I mean he was born and raised in Toronto, isn't that to be expected? That he won't admit to being a Leafs fan seems strange to me because really, who cares? Its a favorite sports team, he could like the Lakers and Yankees and Cowboys for all I care. Obama is pretty unabashed in his support of the Bears and White Sox, and I don't think anyone holds it against him. It just looks like Harper would rather not possibly offend anyone so he'll play it safe.

Harper has never even made his favourite Canadian hockey team known, so the free expression of his love for Cowtown is surprising for some.

Yeah, he hasn't publically said it (why alienate a bunch of hockey fans if you are running for PM?), but it's known he is a Leafs fan.

Proclaiming X city or X country as the best in the world sounds stupid no matter who says it. To me all Harper succeeded in doing was sounding kind of American.

Funnier still is the Calgarians who get all proud as if they have accomplished something incredibly special. Then there's the Vancouverites who get all butt hurt because they feel slighted by it. The whole thing is just stupid on all sides.

If Harper says his favorite team is the Leafs, he believes it will hurt him in Calgary, where his riding is. It's about protecting the image that he's pro-Calgary for everything.

Saying Calgary is the greatest city is the usual rock star thing, and most people outside Calgary realize this is as big a non-story as possible. Just like if he admitted he was a Leafs fan, I think most people in his riding won't get in some big rage about it because odds are not everyone is a Flames fan in his riding anyways.

If someone is seriously going to consider changing their vote because he likes the Leafs and not the Flames, said person should have their right to vote revoked.

Honestly I keep reading the Calgary is the best city articles for the comments. Some of them are pretty hilarious with people getting bent out of shape.

I have lost faith in this statement......on Thursday night the wife and I went out to Costco, and in addition to getting a slab of cheap Kirkland sports drinks, I was looking forward to grabbing some delicious Costco steak. And they were sold out. Why is it that I could not buy a steak in Canada's best city.......

The mistake you made was that you didn't go to Canada's Greatest Costco. That would be the one on Sarcee Trail.

Nice try but of course I'm not saying everyone born in Calgary must be a Flames fan.

My point is why does Harper not wear Leafs gear in the Saddledome rather than pandering to the voters of his riding with his pseudo support of the Flames?

In my view, Harper, expressed through his son, is a Leafs fan.

There is nothing wrong with that but the thread is about how Harper said that Calgary is the best city in Canada just like he "loves" the Flames when he is all decked out in a $200 Flames jersey.

Why not just wear street clothes? Why wear the jersey when it is obvious that you can be proud of being part of one of the best cities in Canada and like tens of thousands of transplants be a Leafs fan?

Or could it just be possible you need to take every politician with a grain of salt because pandering is part of the biz?

Having now lived in another city in another country for the last 8 months I can honestly say that I miss Calgary a lot. The city has a lot of great things going for it and a few not-so-great things. And frankly, the weather is overstated. I always presumed that the statement "so much depends upon the weather" was true. In fact, I've found that it has very little bearing on quality of life or happiness.

My wife and I have considered which Canadian city that we may move to when my visa expires. We've thought about Vancouver but the cost of living makes it a difficult place to migrate to. Also, while the city itself is beautiful and there is lots to do, it's filled with Vancouverites. Toronto is another option but the job market isn't as good as Calgary and the cost of living is higher. So, chances are, unless our next move is to Europe or we decide to stay in Australia, we'll be coming back to Calgary.

Makes no difference where I go...
