Default Milosevic found dead in cell

http://www.cbc.ca/story/world/nation...vic060311.html

He was in bad health, but who knows--suicide, perhaps? Didn't Milosevic try to commit suicide before?

There will be some interesting legal implications, as his trial was supposed to set the standard by which leaders can be held legally accountable for atrocities committed under their watch.

Personally, I think it is terrible. His trial was almost over, and would have been such an important judgment. With Karadzic still at large, and Milosevic now dead there is no "big fish" the ICTY can prosecute that would set the modern benchmark in international criminal proceedings.

Will they still continue his trial posthumously?

While Milosevic certainly won't be missed, I would have rather he lived long enough for his trial to be completed.

One less psycho in the world.

But it's really too bad they didn't finish his trial. And I really hope that with tensions rising again in Kosovo, that some don't use this as a rallying point.

I would suggest they finish the trial. The political implications of his trial are global in nature. You just can't leave it at this point.

I don't know where they were in the trial, but it could be difficult to do that since Milosevic was his own lawyer and presumably a witness as well.

Hmph. I did not know that. Might be difficult then I suppose.

I beleive that the UN should look into this! However rotten or terrible his crimes were the torture he went through at this so called World Court was inhumane!

I mean.... he died of boredom.

Trial started in 2002 and ended yesterday without even closing argumments! So much for a speedy trial!

They should finish the trial and put a bullet in the body, cut off his head, stuff garlic in his mouth and drive a stake through his heart. I don't understand how people can grow up into this type of person.

This isn't the 'World Court', this is the ICTY. It is a tribunal.

The trial has taken a very long time. There is really no excuse, but it should be noted Milosevic did everything in his power to stall proceedings. He vigourously contested the legality of the Tribunal, and as the only indicted individual representing himself it made matters more difficult. Also consider that there were many individuals tried, translations of all materials into at least three languages, Milosevic's failing health, and the difficulty and future significance of the actual case of genocide against him.
