Default Unsafe parking structure at Rocky Mountain Court

Headline from the Sun website..

"Traffic court building evacuated after fears of parkade collapse"

No other info though, anyone know if this is in Calgary?

Not yet, it was just a breaking news banner on the front page of the Sun site.

On Wednesday, July 11, The City issued as Order to Cease occupancy to the main floor businesses and parkade levels 1, 2 and 3 of Rocky Mountain Court due to an unsafe building structure.

The structure was deemed unsafe when the integrity of the level 2 parkade floor was compromised during renovations. Occupants on the main floor and parkade levels 1, 2 and 3 were directed to vacate these floors within hours as a precautionary measure to protect public safety.

My office is near Edmonton Trail and there were a lot of police cars and emergency vehicles headed downtown very fast. I was wondering why, but assume that this is related.

Sounds like someone went too far with the jackhammer.

It doesn't mention that there has been a collapse and it's only the parkade levels and the main floor that are to be evacuated.

Also got to love Sun level reporting, apparently "Rocky Mountain Court" means "Traffic Court" to them. Sheesh, took me all of two seconds to find the correct info.

Edit: Yes this is the condo building. This was in the news a couple of weeks ago due to the massive special assessment that the condo board needs to implement to pay for these repairs.

I feel the same about my father-in-law sometimes as well.

edit: I just realize it is possible you meant when he wasn't in the building, in which case, ignore me.

He'll just have to camp in a tent in that massive backyard of yours.

Wow you guys sure like to run with it. I don't have a massive backyard, i just have a super wide lot where i have never heard one peep from my neighbors in 8 years because our houses are so far apart.

Well, not everyone can enjoy living their life on a secluded country acreage like you have.

My co-worker lives in that building.

I know exactly what they mean about the parkade looking unsafe. The last time I was down there I felt like I was in the collapsed ruins of a nuclear fall-out shelter or something.

I have the misfortune of actually living in this death trap.

Last year at this time, contractors were resurfacing the all of the parkade floors. From what I've seen and heard, instead of cutting 4 inches deep, they cut 8 inches deep and punched holes clean through the concrete slab in places. The contractors and the engineer have been locked in a finger pointing "its their fault" legal tangle with each other ever since.

Given the building's chronic fire alarm problems (1:00am in the morning last night for example), elevator problems, plumbing problems, and previous sprinkler system problems, I'm surprised the whole building hasn't been condemned.

And while the City of Calgary's notice said everything above the 3rd level was safe, the only way to access those floors is by going through the main lobby which dead center in the unsafe area.
