Alberta Bulldog Rescue
I recently have become active as a director with the Alberta Bulldog Rescue.
They have operated for just under two years and have successfully rehomed 45 dogs.
We focus on the rehabilitation and rehoming of English and French Bulldogs.
Currently we have a couple that are going to be a bit more challenging to find their perfect "forever" home. So thought I would reach out to the CP community.
First we have Kong:
Kong loves people and seems to attach more quickly to men. He is a 5 year old neutered male. However, he doesn't like any other dogs and isn't good with young children.
We are accepting applications for him from homes where he would be the only pet and where there are no children under 16 years of age.
More photos of Kong
Next is Blue....he is simply adorable.
Blue is about 3 months old now. He is going to need a LOT of dedicated training as he is deaf.
Our trainer is already working with him and his foster parents to learn hand signals.
His forever home will have to have endless patience and the time to invest in his training.
More photos of Blue.
If you are interested in adopting either of them please read this page of our website carefully, then request an application via email as instructed.
I will also gladly answer any general questions CP'ers may have.

Good luck with these two and great job stepping up to help with these animals.

Good for you first lady.
I had to laugh going through Blue's pictures. My french/boston does the same thing with that orange ball. As if I could get him to push it around when he can just tear it apart to get it all at once.

Thanks x 100 first lady. Simply awesome. If I didn't already have a Boston Terrier, I would have been all over one of them. I hope they find a good home.

Thanks for all the kind comments guys/gals. We have a really great group with ABR, not just the board, but many volunteers as well.
Here is another that is now available for adoption.
Quote:
Angel is an adult French Bulldog that was surrendered by a breeder. She was surrender in incredible pain and is unable to get comfortable long enough to rest - all this due to mange.
Her daily/weekly care regime included medicated baths, anti-itch conditioners, ointments on each and every sore, daily antibiotics (to help fight secondary infections) and daily ear drops to help her inner ears heal. She was also on a special diet.
Now Miss Angel has gained weight, is mange free and is happy healthy snuggle bug. She still suffers from allergies (we think this is may be because her immune system was suppressed for so long) and will need a home that is willing to work with a vet to help manage her symptoms.
Angel is great with pets and kids of all ages.

We were looking at getting a bulldog but had a baby instead. Probably in a year or so we would like to look into getting a bulldog (gf has done her homework on the breed). Do you guys allow adoptions into houses outside of the province at all?

I'm curious as well about out of province. A really good friend is very interested in getting a french bulldog at some point but she doesn't want to go through a breeder.

Right now we only have the infrastructure to handle adoptions within Alberta.
We have a detailed application that is completed, then a home check interview by a volunteer and then those two things are reviewed by our board.
The dogs are accessed by a professional trainer and we also get tremendous feedback from the foster families.
We use all that information to match the rescues to the right families.
It takes a tremendous amount of volunteer hours. While we don't plan on expanding to other provinces, we do hope to be a model for other such organizations to start.
There are several already in Canada and the US. This Facebook page cross posts for many of them.

We are always accepting applications for special foster families.
This weekend Alberta Bulldog Rescue has two incoming dogs. We currently have five in foster care with 3 of those looking for adoptive families (see posts above).
One of the incoming will also require immediate surgery, please consider a monetary donation to aid us with the medical bills.
Info on fostering from our website:
Quote:
Fostering a Dog provides a Bulldog in Need with a safe place to live while ABR works on finding them their forever family. We do not kennel our dogs, unless there is an extreme behavioural issue and that decision is based on safety otherwise all of ABRs rescue dogs are placed in loving foster homes for the duration of their time in rescue.
Our Foster Homes:
- Provide loving, stable, and responsible care for our dogs.
- Assist with training such as socialization, house training, obedience and manners. Your efforts will help the foster dog become adoptable and successful in their forever home.
- Evaluating the dog to assist ABR in matching them to the perfect most suitable forever home.
- Ensure that any dogs or animals in their home already are safe and up to date on vaccinations.
- Attend functions and bulldog meet ups when possible.
- Receive ongoing support from our Board of Directors and key volunteers.
- ABR covers ALL vet costs (which are pre-arranged by ABR)
- Receive a Bully Pack full of bulldog supplies.
- If possible as a non profit we hope that our fosters can provide Bulldog Approved Food for the dog while in their care.
- Care for the foster dog in accordance to our foster agreement.

Ive had pugs my whole life and I know weneed to take a baby face cloth ( thinner than a regular face cloth) and wash out the folds on their faces from time to time, especially if I take them out to the country, or early spring when snow mould is on the ground.
I imagine bull dogs are probably more work than that.
Are these beginner dogs? What other things should owners be aware of with bulldogs?

From my personal experience I would wager, yes bullies are a bit more work.
It's not uncommon for some to need daily cleaning of wrinkles (nose) and ears.
Yeast type infections are very common and can be difficult to manage. I've just started using a new wipe on our bullies, at the vets recommendation. It's called "MalAcetic". They are similar to wet baby wipes, but the difference is they are wet/dry. That is to say it is wet when you clean the area, but it quickly drys, which is very important since it's the moisture that gets trapped that causes the issues.
Our Stewie has these types of yeast manifestations in between his toes, so he gets weekly quasi-baths for just his feet.
By this I presume you mean "the first dog" you own. It depends. I think people really need to access their lifestyle and what type of dog will fit into their home.
For example; many years ago I had Siberian Huskies. We had a young family, I would walk the kids/dogs to/from school, the kids would play with them in the yard and my husband (at the time) would take them for long walks at night. Also living across from Nose Hill Park was a huge benefit.
Nowadays though it is just me and Cory, he is away 2/3 of the year, so really it is just me. I work full-time and often am busy with various volunteer activities. So a less active dog, like a bulldog, suits our lifestyle much better.

Condensed list:
Breathing issues
Skin issues as mentioned above
Allergies aren't uncommon
Hip / joint issues
Initial cost
They fart, burp and drool
Some snore very loudly
My husband Cory actually blogged on this in detail a little while ago.
http://www.corymorgan.com/?p=1189
The first part is about our experience with bullies and then he goes into the pros and cons. Bit lengthy, but worth a read IMHO.

How's Blue doing? It looks like the surgery went ok, judging from the cast. Any update?

Blue is recovering very well. Since he is a growing puppy his cast is changed each week.
At one point he had managed to pull it off, thus he now has the additional sling that wraps around his body.
You can follow his progress via his photo album on FB.

We have a whopping 10 incoming rescues. 5 English, 1 Frenchie, 2 Frenchtons, 2 French/English!
ABR is in desperate need of collars, leashes, medium and large crates, bags of high quality food, bedding, dishes, coats, harnesses and lots of toys!!!!
New or used - our bullies don't know the difference!
If you can help out with any of these things drop me a line.
Thanks

i've been really wanting a frenchie... what's their life expectancy like, and what sort of special care does one need to give to french bulldogs / bulldogs in general?
It seems like special attention needs to be given to cleaning the folds and toes.
I've owned one dog before (before he passed away) a bichon shih tzu. would a frenchie be a bit more work in caring for?
