It's 2012, yet these societies are still stuck in 1200 CE. It seems like something other than invading them needs to be done.

Can't fully blame religion on this one, its a fact these guys are time travelers from 1000's of years ago adhering to a a religion that fits in well with those times.
Religion is obviously a part of the problem, an ideology that allows such wickedness and encourages this type of behavior to continue in the modern era. Islam simply is not designed to be a modern religion that adapts to our ever evolving humanity, its rigid, encourages such obedience that its better compared to a dangerous cult.
Sure there is plenty of people who are quite reasonable in Islam, but the leaders all over the Islamic world want to spread Islam, be ruled by sharia law and have no intention on bending or breaking to fit the western worlds version of morality and laws.
This is a clash of cultures, a clash of religions, and most accurately a class of eras, the modern vs the ancient.

Communism is a close 2nd in the killing people department which is strange since it's the anti-religion which promotes everyone being equal. The other extreme.

The thing about communism is it is in itself a cult of sorts, at least in practice.
But the thing that no one disputes is the death toll would be dramatic if the kind of weapons of mass destruction that were available this last century were in the hands of religious fanatics, just imagine what the Crusaders would have done with nukes, how about the Mongols, or the Islamic armies.
We are about 100yrs away from some scary powerful technology which will make easy access to very powerful weapons possible, we need to modernize and get sanity to a great deal of this planet or we will blow ourselves up.

The Taliban?
Diplomatic Channels for legitimacy?
This is a group of nomadic warlords from the 17th century we're talking about, here.
The Taliban is legitimate.

I think this was certainly true in past centuries.
In modern times though, democide has been the greatest killer of man-kind. Corrupt governments all over the world have killed hundreds of millions of people and this doesn't even include wars. Think Chairman Mao, Stalin, Pol Pot, Hitler etc.

Its unfortunate but it will only get worse once the western soldiers withdraw from Afganistan. There is no way the Afgan Government military will be able to hold them back from taking over at least the outlaying provinces.

And they government military also isn't interested in holding them back, so why would they?
This is a stupid civil war that we've gotten involved in and made worse over the course of the last 30 years.
Hard to imagine it getting worse if the Allies pulled out.

I would say it gets considerably worse for a lot of the people living there if/when the allies leave. Especially for any of the people that don't agree with the Taliban doctrine or do something to violate their laws. They don't seem to have much of an appeal process.
I can see the point whereas if the civil war is over, regardless of who wins, then the fighting stops and in a way that is a good thing, I just wouldn't want to be a woman living under that regime, or someone who wants an education etc.

To be frank this is the country they want, women as well as men, if it wasn't it would have changed, as we did.
And while I wouldn't blame religeon for the barbarity, given free reign historically all the religeous are just as barberous, christians as well as muslims, ask any jew in 14th century spain or a slightly different woman accused of withcraft in the 16th century.

How ISN'T it a religious killing?
The fact that the charges were invented means nothing. The means used to 'sell' this action as justified was a religious one. Divinely instructed. God's order. From bigotry to genocide, people can find religious instruction to support any number of positions.
I'm sorry, but to pretend that the religion is some sort of 'fall guy' in this instance is to ignore the painfully obvious. Is this cultural, sure, but this is a culture that is permeated so deeply by Islam, you can hardly speak of one without mentioning the other. Ever heard of Sharia Law? The moral code and religious law of Islam. And it, too, is purported to be the infallible order of Allah. We have the ability here to change unjust laws. Sharia? If God said it, you damn well won't be changing it.

I wonder what the billions of peaceful religious people would think of us painting all religion as the root of evil. I am not religious myself anymore, but I bristle at the suggestion that if there was no religion then the entire human race would be all utopian/enlightened etc.
I guarantee even if you somehow magically converted those Taliban murderers to Athiests, they would still cook up a justification to commit atrocities.
