That's because North Americans are incredibly lazy when it comes to translating diacritics. Usually they just drop the squiggly mark. Though if you look, you see everywhere how it is starting to trend the other way, where diacritics are left intact.

If you take a train to Munich, your ticket will say "MUENCHEN" even though the German name of the city is München. In German, there is an established rule for spelling words that contain special characters for usage where those characters aren't available. It doesn't seem to be as well defined in other languages that use the umlaut.

It also shows that the Flames took the time to make sure they did properly translate his name when they drafted him.

Look at Grossmann. In Dallas, they always spelled his name with one "N" and it wasn't until he was traded to Philly and someone was checking his paperwork that they realized that it should have two "N"s.

Diacritics? I had to look that one up. Thank you Resolute. I always wondered what those things were called.

I wouldnt be surprised to see them more rolls the lines on the pp this year with whomever is playing the best or the last 20 seconds or so, play Baertschi-Backlund-Stempniak. I guess we will see.

I might have missed it in this thread but did anyone notice Baertschi is spelt wrong in the thread title?
It's not nonsense. The point got through. It was hard at the time. Thanks for replying to the essence of the post.

I'm excited. PS, Cervenka for Snickers was acceptable.

Wanna know how I know Bleacher Report doesn't know anything? When describe Ty Rattie as this:

Quote:
Ty Rattie is a rugged and physical forward who plays in the dirty areas of the ice. He has a solid physical presence considering his size.
Am I missing something. Rattie was one of the softest guys on Portland. Just an extremely weak player. Maybe that just has to do with his size and bulk right now.

Yep, Bleacher Report is pure garbage. I didn't know the 'style' of the site a few years back and actually got sucked into it for a few weeks.

Looks like 3 scoring lines to me. You could mix and match. Not much size there but there's enough skill for 3 scoring lines this year more than any year I'd say.
That's only if at most one player from that list is a bust.

If Cammalleri fails at transitioning to center, Cervenka turns out to be a bust, Glencrosses gets all temperamental after the of loss of both Jokinen and Bourque (his best buddies on the team apparently) and relegation to third line, if Stempniak loses a step, if we have a couple of injuries, if Backlund does not improve a lot from last year...

That's what I mean by not having depth. We barely have the guys to go with three decent (not great) scoring lines assuming that every single thing goes as well as reasonably can be expected.

The way I see it, realistically we have the makings of two decent to good scoring lines, one good to great checking line and a line of yet unknown problems.

By that logic, give Bärtchi the good linemates, don't put him with the guys that can't hack in the top 6. And yeah, I would give him special treatment and put him in the top 6 if he can at all handle himself there.

I'm going to guess Tanguay will be on the point, giving Baertschi room on the first or second unit.

Baertschi-Cammalleri-Iginla
Wideman-Tanguay

Glencross-Cervenka-Hudler
Giordano-Brodie

I don't think Baertschi is the type of talent you can leave off your power play, regardless. He's got unbelievable hands and anticipation and he never seems rattled, so I think he should be given solid PP minutes from the get go.

Tanguay was brutal on the point though.

If Baertschi needs PP time, take out Glencross. As much as I love scoreface, he's better at ES and PK.

I think Cammalleri will almost certainly not work out at center. Has there ever been a player that cut his teeth in the NHL on wing, that successfully transitioned to first line center? I think there's a good chance Stajan ends up playing first line center again.

Tanguay-Stajan-Iginla
Baertschi-Cervenka-Cammalleri
Glencross-Backlund-Hudler
Bouma-Jones-Comeau
Jackman, Stempniak

There's a line-up that gives better depth and let's players play to their strengths. Stajan facilitates Tanguay and Iginla well enough for the line to be effective and will be solid defensively.

EDIT: I forgot Stempniak. But I still don't know where he fits when/if Cammalleri moves back to wing.

I realize you forgot him but there is no chance that Stempniak is out of the lineup. Averages over 20 goals per 82 games.

I think Tanguay can be a solid set up guy for the 2nd pp while Baertschi opens up time and space with the #1 unit

I imagine there has but a player I remember for sure, who moved from defence to centre and had great success as well, was this guy.

http://mapleleafslegends.blogspot.ca...red-kelly.html

Our own Paul Reinhart often played centre as well.

The thing with Cammallari is that he's small and most modern centres have some size as they often have to be the third defenceman, otherwise I think he'd be okay as he grew up at the centre position, so yeah I kind of agree with your conclusion and I wonder why we signed Stempniak. Maybe he was signed before we knew we could sign Hudler.

I think Stempniak, Comeau and Stajan are around as insurance in case the young guys falter. Whether we like it or not the odds off all of Backlund, Cervenka and Baertschi having great a year is very slim.

That's $7.5M in insurance. Should have called GEICO.

I prefer to think of it as about $9 in guaranteed salaries and bonuses for 3 question marks and veteran replacements.
