Shaw scheduled and flaked on three separate service appointments in two weeks, and that was it for me. Called Telus and have been pretty happy with them for the last few months now.

instead of getting it from another poster why dont u google easy own and read the small print instead of trolling me. Calling in and speaking to a CSR also confirmed that they do not rent most of their equipment but easy own. With the exception of the really basic digital box.

No offense. But one of you guys has never showed up on time.... ever, to my place. In fact I have had 2 no shows. Even if the end product is mediocre, at least pretend you care. Shaw, and its employees, do not. They know they have a monopoly.
In the 20 years I have been with Shaw, I have dumped around $25000, enough to buy a decent automobile, and I have never had a satisfactory service experience. And the last tech that came in my house, left a BO stink, that took 3 days to go away. I threw away the ottoman he sat on, because his ass crack sweat somehow permeated into it, and it made me want to barf.
Shaw sucks.

I wonder if certain areas of the city have a worse rap for Shaw techs than others. I have never had an issue with phoning or a service call tech since I started with them eons ago.

Ok, instead of trusting what multiple Shaw employees have told me, including one in this thread, I will instead use solely your link for the information I need.
The Shaw terms of Use, which are linked from the page you posted lists several conditions for the use and return of rental equipment. In addition, I have rental Shaw equipment currently on my Shaw account. I assume that means that Shaw rents equipment and whatever source you have saying otherwise (Shaw CSRs etc) is incorrect.
Also from that URL,
Quote:
If you sign up for the Shaw Easy Own program, you will obtain title to the hardware immediately with the understanding you are required to pay Shaw for the hardware in 36 pre-authorized monthly installments. You also agree any outstanding balance is due immediately to Shaw if Shaw Services are terminated
|
That means, you own the device and if you cancel services, they want you to finish paying for it. You are buying something on an interest free payment plan - to expect to not pay for it is ridiculous. I guess this is a contract, but that contract does not relate to forcing you to maintain services, but to pay for the equipment that you bought.
Now, the fact that you can not pay and surrender the device upon cancellation (as kermit suggested) is not covered on that website, so I will admit that you might not be able to do so.

Pylon, how are you getting gamecenter?

I got a call from Shaw offering me my extreme speed internet plus HD TV with a clunky dual tuner (6416 I believe) for a year. It's for $39/mo. (save $20/mo for my internet) so I took the deal even though I don't bother watching Shaw TV. They only gave me 12 HD channels with options for another 20 more. Of course, when I phoned Shaw about changing the programming, it can't be done without losing the deal, so I don't watch Shaw.
My Bell deal gives me around 70 HD channels for about $80/mo. plus extra for Centre Ice, so yeah it costs more but I'm willing to pay it for better programming and very good PVRs. Bell does give deals if you threaten to cancel but yeah, it seems the best way to get a deal is to switch providers, if you can put up with the new service.

I suspended my Shaw Cable for 6 months and they told me there was a 10 day "processing" period. When I asked what was being processed, she kept repeating that it was an internal process that couldn't be avoided. I told her that when I activate or deactivate channels, they seem to be able to do it instantaneously. She then repeated the same line over and over again that it was internal. Seemed more like it was cash grab for no reason.
So 10 days pass, cable is still hooked up. I have a bad feeling after reading all of this that they will try to charge me for their mistake.
Shaw has certainly changed, I always found them very easy to deal with in the past.

Shaw vs Telus is like Westjet vs AC. You'll hear good and bad about both.
I've had Shaw for long time though and the CS has really gone down hill in the past few years. I just pray every morning that nothing breaks so I don't have to phone them.
Someone from Winnipeg was telling me that they were handing out crappy wifi's now with their Internet. That ought to fill up the support lines even more.

Shaw doesn't have contracts which had kept me with them, but their customer service has dropped to Bell like levels recently. I have a tech coming Thursday to come fix/replace my PVR. Hoping its fast and simple. I hate having to wait for this crap.

Surprisingly Bell CSR service has been good for me for a couple of years now. No more bald face lies and every year I get a new rebate on my service. The thing is they don't give out free service calls as a matter of course, you have to make a deal with them or pay extra for Dish Care. Where I live Dish Care isn't available and neither are service calls. I'm not considered a part of Bell's territory, so I do any repairs or upgrades myself. I enjoy it in fact, it's become a bit of a hobby.

I would much rather deal with a few flaky appointments and long wait times than Telus having me by the balls with a 3 year contract.

So I have the old DVI-to-HDMI cable box - what are my options to upgrade without changing my service? Everything I see on Shaw's page is much higher than what I'm already paying for less channels.

We switched from Shaw to Telus in November. I'm pleased to hear that Shaw is coming back with better deals for people who threaten to switch.
Before we switched we went to Shaw and told them we were going to because we were getting a better deal. Their loyalty person was snotty and said there was nothing we could do and we were already getting a deal so we should basically shut up and accept it.
When we finally did switch, we made a point of saying that we switched after 13 years of being their customer because they didn't try, at all, to retain our business. We noticed that after the Telus promo including the free laptop was over, that Shaw was suddenly more competitive. Hopefully there were more people like us who let them know that they should be doing more to keep our business. Sounds like there may have been.
We're fairly happy with Telus so far, and the laptop is better than I expected it to be.

On shaw for cable/internet and using telus for my cell phone and really don't have complaints about either. The prices do suck if you accept what they offer out of the box, but with some calls to retention you can get most of the things you ask for you just need some persistence.
There are some awesome threads on Redflagdeals with people posting exactly what kind of retention deals they are getting out of the companies:

UPDATE: So After Shaw called us back and said they would honour the price they quoted to us for $144.90, we got sick of being charged $164.90 every month and having to call in and fight for the $20 credit. We switched to telus today, and now our bills are going to be $96 for the first 6 months (with the first month free) and then $154 after. If you're looking to switch providers, I can assure you that Shaw is definitely not the way to go...they do provide high internet speeds, but their prices are expensive and their customer services is terrible, (i've been interrupted, yelled at and even hung up on, all the while I acted nice and patiently).

I've recently had the same kind of horrid experience with Shaw customer service...I'd been paying for a schwack of HD channels that didn't work for some reason and was told last year they weren't in my package. They were.
They offered me a whopping $50 credit. So I tweeted this and cancelled TV service all together.
