A list of the all the recent players who have produced in the CHL at a level similar to Baertschi: (http://flamesnation.ca/2012/2/13/sve...hi-comparables)

Name Drafted PPG
Rob Schremp 25th 2.54
Wojtek Wolski 21st 2.29
Dave Bolland 32nd 2.2
Corey Perry 28th 2.17
Steve Downie 29th 2.04
Brayden Schenn 5th 1.96
Sven Baertschi 13th 1.94
Claude Giroux 22nd 1.93
Bryan Little 12th 1.88
Jordan Eberle 22nd 1.86

So, in fact, you have it completely backwards; for every 10 guys like Baertschi, only one of them DOESN'T make it in the NHL.
You can even say the red flags were raised from schremp because he wasn't the best skater and if I recall his even strength numbers were questionable.

Plus the whole 'Oilers' thing.

Yeah they don't exactly have a good track record developing players. Although lately with the 1st overall picks it does make things easier. Schremp was just 1297 points shy of their expectations.

Bleacher Report has Baertschi ranked #14 of all prospects after the 2012 draft. Tom Erixon comes in at #17.

The NHL does not have the option of having ä, ö and ü on the jerseys, so players with one of these letters in their names basically have two options:

a) go for "ae" instead of ä, "oe" instead of ö and "ue" instead of ü, these variations are equally acceptable.

b) just drop the points. Austrian NHLers Pöck and Nödl have done so and now have Pock and Nodl on the back.

Sven chose the first option, which to me makes a lot more sense because the pronunciation is still the same. Although I will say that f.e. for Olli Määttä it's probably better to just drop the points, otherwise it would be Maeaettae

I hope that clarifies that a bit
So if ä sounds like the ea in bear, why doesn't he spell his name "Beartschi"?
Very confusing.

Just a guess, how 'bout #72. He wore #27 with Portland. He'll flip as Smith wears #27. Would be kinda' cool as there hasn't been a full time roster player to wear a number in seventies, (for the Flames).

Why not just wait until he chooses?

If one wants to get pedantic (and The Hockey News did when he made his splash in Calgary - they actually did a sidebar story on the spelling of his name), the title is spelled wrong as ' and 'a' are not the same letter. Rather, ' would roughly translate to 'ae' So it should either be Bärtschi (as Portland did it) or Baertschi (as Calgary does it).

ä sounds like the English ea, but if you replace ä for whatever reason, only ae is acceptable. I agree, it's a bit confusing. Maybe this explanation from wikipedia helps:

Quote:
A similar glyph, A with umlaut, appears in the German alphabet. It represents the umlauted form of a, resulting in [ɛ] or [e] (for some speakers only). However, it is called "Ä" or "Umlaut-A", not "A Umlaut". With respect to diphthongs, Ä behaves as an E, e.g. Bäume /bɔɪmə/ (Engl.: trees). In German dictionaries, the letter is collated together with A, while in German phonebooks the letter is collated as AE. The letter also occurs in some languages which have adopted German names or spellings, but is not a part of these languages' alphabets. It is commonly found in Ulster-Scots writing.
The letter was originally an A with a lowercase e on top, which was later stylized to two dots.
In other languages that do not have the letter as part of the regular alphabet or in limited character sets such as US-ASCII, Ä is frequently replaced with the two-letter combination "Ae". This is also true for Swiss German where the upper-case "Ä" does not exist, whereas the lower-case "ä" does. The reason for this likely lies in German Swiss typewriters layout having no upper-case version of the character, producing the lower case "à" instead.
After all, it's not that important I guess ... Bärtschi or Baertschi are correct. Bartschi isn't.

Can't wait to see if he pushes for top line minutes and how the vet's respond. They'll have no choice to play up to their ability. Or risk being shown up.

That would be the best choice, but at times I get impatient (like most humans) haha. I guess I'll wait it out.

This. This is the single most important reason to have decent young players IMO. It wasn't an accident that we were winning when Sven was up. It wasn't because of his offensive output (although it helped) it was because he amped up the intensity of games and practices since no one wants to be one-upped by a 19 year old junior player.

Or you could just get Baertschi done and wait for the number. I dont know if that would be more expensive or not. I for one hope he takes #17 so I can salvage my Bourque jersey.

Because German isn't pronounced exactly the same as English? How is that confusing? I don't think German uses "ea" and I'm not sure how that would be pronounced.

Lang for example is the German equivalent of long and is actually pronounced close to how we pronounce long. In English we would pronounce that word Laing. Although English isn't exactly consistent in this usage. You'll notice that the A in bang sounds like ai or how we pronounce the letter A, while the A in bar is more like how the Deutsch speakers would pronounce A's.

So if Bartschi didn't have the umlaut (ä) it would be pronounced close to Bar-chi. But since it does have the umlaut the sound of vowel changes to something close to Bear-chi or Bair-chi

Deutsch/German has a lot more consistent pronounciation. English is actually the confusing one as we've borrowed a lot of words from German and French and inconsistencies abound in rules and pronounciation.

I think it was poking fun of "ea" when it was supposed to be "ae"
