I think Celebration of Light in Vancouver is basically a fire-works competition, and not a typical festival. Probably those attendance figures include many repeat viewers who go to each night of the event.

I was in Toronto last week, and I have no idea where the 1.3 million comes from. Am I included in that number because I was downtown during a free concert and bought a pint at the bar? You're absolutely right, this is an apples to veal comparison here.

The point is one does not depend on the other. NO, had a lot to attract people from all over the continent. They were a destination.
And they need those people now. I know we wont suffer a brutal hurricane, but bankers aren't going to stay away if we have some cowboys and nekkid girlies. In fact they might show up.
The funny thing is we are the biggest festival in Canada, and one of the 10 biggest in the world. If you think it's hurting our image, you are listening to (jealous) Edmonton and Toronto.

I'd imagine every festivals numbers listed includes many repeat admissions. I suppose thats the better way to say it, number of admissions, not attendance. Tracking attendance by individuals seems almost impossible.

It was on Askmen.com last year. I know not very specific, but they did leave a good path.
Top 10 party destinations in the world. Complete with financials.
I can probably refine, but I don`t really care.
EDIT I do know from working.

I would be rather surprised if it is one of the top10 festivals in the world. I dislike it when people spread false information.

So are we all agreed that Daradon is some weird social media account and the Stampede Board is paying for each post made on the account?

If anyone is going to the Johnny Reid concert, you'll get to see Theo Fleury open for him!
http://theofleury14.com/2012/07/05/t...-reid-concert/
Quote:
Theo has been recently working with some great musicians to create a unique new sound with an age old familiar feel -- he calls it ‘Hockey Tonk’, a mixture of his life experiences on and off the ice combined with his love of country music. From original tunes like “This Ain’t My First Rodeo”, “As The Story Goes” and “The Bull” to Buck Owen’s classic “Made In Japan”, fans and critics alike who have had a sneak peek all love it and now, debuting at the Johnny Reid concert on July 13th at the Calgary Saddledome, Theo will bring it all home.

He may be thinking of this article, where CNN suggested the Stampede was the 5th best place in the world to "party like a rock star".
http://www.cnngo.com/explorations/pl...y-spots-503515
On attendance - the figures given are Stampede Park admissions only. It won't include the 300-400k per year at the parade, or any of the hundreds of community, corporate and private events. All told, I would guestimate that attendance at a Stampede event is over 2 million annually.
Also, a really excellent article on the Stampede from the Globe and Mail a couple days ago: http://www.theglobeandmail.com/life/...2104/?page=all

So how come Stampede didn't get it's own loonie (or any coin) like the Habs or Roughriders did for their 100th year?

A loonie featuring mini donuts, throw up on the ground and used condoms is probably not very appropriate. Then again neither is celebrating the Riders.

You do know that almost everything the Stampede celebrates is pretty far off from what the origin and past of Calgary was like right? This Stampede myth has been thoroughly debunked by many writers. However the myth is still a great excuse to party!

Which bolsters us, as a community and as as a banking city.
Again, not sure what the argument is... We did it good?

The myth is great, it is just laughable when people actually buy into the myth and think of the Stampede as an actual reflection on the past of Calgary. One of the most notable people to do this was Ric McIver, and he got chewed up pretty good for his quotes related to it.

As always, I must remember dry humour does not translate well on the interweb. No hate at all for Calgary. If I hated Calgary I wouldn't have moved back here, and believe me I really loved living in Victoria. The only other city in Canada I'd live besides here and Vic is Montreal and thats because that was home growing up. Just trying to offer a humourous take that let's be real, while not the best representation of the Stampede, isn't wrong either. It's silly and somewhat gross, but mini donut consumption, public vomit and condom usage all rise substantially during the Stampede.
