Oddly enough ... I grew up mostly eating thin crust pizza. My wife ( from Calgary) thinks it looks and taste disgusting... I think thin is the way to go .

I think that what is more prevalent in Calgary and Western Canada is termed "New England" or "Greek" pizza. Chicago deep-dish is something else.
Living in the UK, you cannot get anything other than Neapolitan pizza; thin crust, light on the toppings, eat it with a knife and fork. This is the only thing that exists here that isn't fast food pizza. Whenever I my better half and I are back in Calgary, we always make sure we have some Greek-style pizza at one of the city's many pizza places - Nick's, Matador, Demetris, Spiros. All run by Greeks.

IMO Verona's is the best pizza in the city. I miss their old restaurant in Mission, but the quality of their food court location in TD Square is still excellent.

While on the expensive side, Vogglio D'Pizza (14th st and 15th ave) has amazing thin crust pizza.

I think most of the new 'trendy' pizza places around town have been focusing on thin crust style pizza's. And many are excellent; Pulcinella, Una, WOP, Double Zero, Cibo.

Go to Naples. I'm not sure how, but it will take the magic out of both.
I remember we were going to go to a famous, locally-recommended pizza place for dinner in Naples, and when we got there it was packed (at about 11pm) and the waiting list was over an hour. We were starving, so instead we went to the place next door that was there only to take the overflow traffic from the famous place. Turned out to be the best pizza I've ever had. Then I ate at about 3 other places....equally awesome.
There's a reason why it's a step above even Grimaldis. The region is the home of San Marzano tomatoes (the best tomatoes for sauce), Buffalo Mozzarella (the best cheese for pizza), and amazing olive oil, basil etc. All the stuff that your local Neapolitan-style fancy pants pizza restaurant claims to use on their pizza? It comes from there!
And the best part? A personal pie is about 3-4 euros.
Grimaldi's is still a great effin pie, but damn, was the Naples pie ever transcendent.

Fotze, I found the pizza in northern italy to be good....but not quite in the same league as around Naples. It does get better.
I think Calgary has come a long way in the last 5 years when it comes to neopolitan-style (ie, thin crust) pizza. A place like Without Papers could slide into any NY space and fit right in.

The inspiration for Greek-style pizza is ladenia which I believe comes from the island of Kimolos and translates roughly to olive oil bread. Traditionally it is made with lots of tomatoes and onions. Not much in the way of cheese is found, other than feta.
I've made this and I can attest that the dough (crust) is very similar to the Greek-style pizzas one gets in Calgary. Allegedly ladenia has been made on Kimolos since the Venetian conquest of Argentiera (13th century), though the dates are imprecise.

Depending on the quality of cheese, yes, it does. Like with most things, quality of ingredients is the key. I've had many Neapolitan pizzas where you know the sauce comes from a tin, the basil is dried and the cheese is not mozzarella of any type. This, can and does, invariably affect the final product.

I just wanted to give a shout out to the Varsity Pizza guys. A few years ago they bought this little pizza shop and kept the food as good as the original, they have recently opened a SW location (near westhills), and it seems to be taking a while to catch on down there. It seems the previous owner of that pizza shop (under a different name), ran the business into the ground, and not sure if people know there is a completely different pizza shop there now.

Anyway if you live in the SW, give this shop a try, I've been eating at varsity pizza for 20 years (OMG I can't believe that's true), and I really would like to see these guys do well, just genuine nice guys...and awesome pizza.

I found the food tasted better the further south you went in Italy. But Naples by far had the best tasting pizza. I tried a couple places but found Gino Sorbillo to be the best, kept going afterwards. 5-7 Euro for a giant pizza, you got to a point where you were completely full, but just kept eating cause it was that good.
