Here is one for you Bruce (awesome thread BTW)
Who is Da Shan (大山)?
|
Da Shan sounds like a mandarine name. Unfortunately I have no idea who this could be. Da (big) Shan (mountian)? lol...no idea. Is this person an actor? Singer?

Why do Chinese (others as well) pick English names the can't pronounce? Like Rick.
Also why do call themselves in the child version, like Rickie, Tommy etc.
|
My grandmother has a hard time pronouncing my name, and my dad doesn't exactly pronounce my name right either. I think it's really preference. Sure, my dad can't quite pronounce my name, but the fact that he likes the name is the main reason why he picked it. I suspect lots of chinese folks just simply enjoy the name and choose it in spite of not being able to pronounce it.

Do Chinese-Canadian people add MSG to their food at home? If so is it in a granular form like salt that you shake onto the food?
If MSG and Chinese food are apparently so unhealthy for you why do I see so many really old Chinese people (90's) walking around quite well looking healthy?

Not chinese... but in reality a lot of the "chinese food" that's out there is Americanized chinese food. A lot of the "chinese" stuff that people order are just fast food variants. The stuff they cook at home is usually a lot healthier. Also I find that when I'm with chinese families, they often order different stuff off the menu than your typical ginger beef, sweet and sour pork etc.
That's what I've been told anyways...

3. Unless in Shaq's case you are a racist black person.
4. I have to wonder why a white guy would choose a chinese girl? They are loud(point #2), most have no boobs and no matter what you do her parents will hate you. hehe

Asian girls go for white guys because usually they're nicer.

To answer your questions:
1. My family and I don't really use MSG to cook. Salt does the work. I know a lot of families that occasionally do. To be honest, not every chinese family cooks with MSG all the time. The reason why the old looks so fit is because they tend to enjoy their comfort food from back home. Comfort food/peasent food from asia is usually pretty healthy.
.
|
My sister-in-law is Asian and cooks with MSG. She says that it helps keep the veggies crunchy when making a stir fry, and honestly, I think she is right. I am not sure what the science is behind it, but it seems to make a difference.
I also can't say that MSG makes me feel ill or tired in any way. I think the effect is psychosomatic for a lot of people.

Yes, to some degree. Kung Fu and Math. We're still trying to figure out rap battles, so that will take some time.

Don't forget driving. We Chinese are still trying to figure how to do that properly. But it's not our fault really. Its in our genetics. Our squinty eyes causes natural tunnel vision.

damnit, saw you responded came in looking for something gold
....leaving unsatisfied. I do agree though, and thus I have a question. Do asians ever go "that's such a white person thing to do"? Of course in an unredneck kinda way.
