Ya it's amazing! I would imagine your coverage in Calgary is a ton better than here in Victoria. But what a smart idea from Shaw and the businesses that have it.
Does Shaw give these companies a break or how does it work?

I noticed it in Winnipeg the other day. Great signal. Too bad I'm not a Shaw customer.

I think someone on this board was offered the opportunity to house one of the Exo routers at their business, and the short answer is no, there is no incentive.
I imagine for retail business though, having people seek out wifi would be incentive enough.

When I was in Miami they had free Wifi city wide. It was awesome. It was stronger in downtown/South Beach but pretty cool to be able to connect wherever you were.

I'm suprised they don't. I was about to switch to Telus for my internetz but decided to stay Shaw just for this reason with my iPhone and iPad.

I doubt they have much of a problem getting people to agree to it.
I would, in a heartbeat.

I work for the company that installs the Shaw EXO wifi units.
Businesses pay nothing to have the equipment installed which is actually very expensive because it's all top of the line Cisco equipment. They also get put on the app and get marketing materials to let customers know that they can get wifi there. It's a pretty good deal considering that it's completely free right now as Shaw is aggressively trying to expand the network.
Any Cp'ers that own a business and want to get it hooked up there can msg me.

Don't get me wrong about the incenting part - being allowed to participate should be incentive enough!

The amazing part is that they're putting it up on smaller towns as well.
Selkirk, Manitoba has a Shaw EXO hotspot as well, which is pretty damn cool. Usually the smaller towns get the shaft. Seems like Shaw is putting these up wherever they sell their services.

Yeah, Shaw eats the cost of installing the infrastructure but then that makes people subscribe to Shaw so they can take advantage of it.

It's a pretty strong strategy. Shaw won't be losing my business anytime soon. I've eaten at three places now that I never would have considered had they not been on the Shaw EXO map. What kills me is I'm often in need of wifi for work and the closest place to me ends about 15 feet from the front door of my favorite sushi place.

Talked to a Shaw higher up guy who said 70,000 spots are planned

Which wouldn't be surprising. Even smaller towns like Pincher Creek get Shaw Internet.
I would imagine every single location that Shaw services will get a hotspot.

I had lunch near one of the Shaw hotspots today, and ran a quick speed test on my phone:
Not bad at all for a wifi hotspot, especially compared with the wifi at some hotels and cafes I have tried in the past.

What it's the arrangement regarding data caps? I can imagine that there would be significant usage on the business's account.
