Ya id say its common practice for Elementry kids. My mom would always get lots of cards/chocolates ect. around Christmas from her students, but maybe thats just because its a Catholic school.
My mom was a public, elementary school teacher for 40 years in a small town in BC and would usually receive small gifts at the end of the year. They were anything from chocolates, to coffee mugs or plants.
My friend is a new teacher at a private school for rich kids outside Vancouver. For Christmas in her first year she received a La Senza gift card. We all found it was one of the weirdest gifts you could give the teacher of your 7 year old.

When I was a kid in the 80s, it was common to give your teacher a gift at Christmas. This was only during elementary school, though.
Yup. I don't think it even continued much past Grade 3 for us. By high school, only the weird girls gave the teachers gifts, or those girls who were way too flirty with the male teachers would give those teachers something.

A teacher with 5 years teaching experience makes $74,400 per year. They get paid well enough, especially considering all the time off they get.
I ain't buying them nothin.

I actually looked at the same table before I made my post (through this link), but it didn't specify the requirements for the classifications.
I was actually under the impression that the least education you could have to be a teacher was an undergrad, so I assumed the step up was the Masters.
Edit: Now that I think of it, if you get an undergrad and then 2 years for your education degree on top of that, you would be making 80k a year after 5 years. That's not too bad if you disregard the dealing with that many kids on a daily basis part.

Since I don't think anyone answered you, every time I've heard it a "pink job" is the woman's responsibility, a "blue job" is the man's. I'm sorry it didn't live up to your imagination.

Thanks. I don't recall the last time I received a gift for doing my job. Or getting 8 weeks vacation.
This is a common misconception of uneducated parents with uneducated children. Teachers start holding meetings for the new school year in mid-august so really its only a bit over 5 weeks.
You also probably dont know that teachers work outside of school doing IPP's, Lesson Plans, Report Cards, in addition to marking tests and assignments.
They also need to spend there breaks doing supervision and come in early or stay late for meetings.
They get paid well because they were trained. Its a rough job and pointing at there salary and acting like a monkey makes you look ######ed because of the amount of work these people have to put in.
The sad thing is its probably your fault your child is doing poorly in school and you blame the teacher instead of yourself.

You don't want to thank them for taking care of your kids for 9 months and teaching them how to be productive members of society?
I typically don't take a person's income or vacation schedule into account before buying them a gift.
Sorry grandma, no gift for you, you have a nice retirement fund!
My kid likes his teacher, wants to give them a gift because he likes the teacher, we go out shopping for a gift for the teacher. Even better if I think the teacher has gone a good job (which my kid's teachers have).
It just tends to happen on the last day of school because that's a convenient day for such things to occur.
