As much as I dislike Italian soccer the English don't deserve this.

England didn't deserve it, I am all for defensive football as an Italian but you shouldn't make this Italian team look like Spain.

Deserved win.

Brutal penalty by Cole. Opened up his hip and completely gave it away.

Germany-Italy, it's going to be fun!

Thank the lord.

With all due respect to England they had no business even being in the game.

They tried to pull a Chelsea and the coin flip didn't go their way.

But you're Italian!

What England did to Italy today, you've been doing to other teams for 100 years!

Italy probably deserved it based on play (although neither team was very impressive) but tough to be happy for a team with Balotelli, Pirlo and anyone from Juventus winning.

Desered win for the azure, on the bright side I would rather lose to them than the bloody boche, and as much as I was worried by Hodgsons appointment I suspect if he can pull the defence together in a few weeks they will play much better under him given some time and Hart looks like a good goalie to take them into the next world cup.

Yes but why? Why has English football sunk to this level?

Italy plays defensive with men behind the ball but England combined Italy's defense with their long ball style.

At least Italy is usually able to hold possession due to their effective counter-attacking style and they try to push people up the field.

England's tactics today were just ugly.

Development. It is easier for big clubs to pay for foreign stars than to develop their own. Too many big clubs that play in Europe against other top clubs are light on home grown talent. You need your best players playing at your best clubs. Granted it is a bit better now, but a few years ago Aston Villa supplied a disproportionate number of England squad players and clubs like Arsenal did not.

But this is a major digression from this thread.

I mentioned two matches earlier

England-Holland Euro 1996
England-Argentina WC 1998

even England-Brazil WC 2002 (although that when I think England started to go downhill)

THAT's English football.

----

What's happened to the exciting English winger? Like Waddle, McMannaman, Beckham etc...
You could go back 50 years.
