Default Steven Harper and Vic Toews want to eavesdrop on you!

They've been forced to back off, temporarily at least, but the Party that wants to access your internet and email history without a warrant, now wants to listen in on your conversations at the airport and at border crossings.

Big Brother anyone?

http://news.nationalpost.com/2012/06...der-crossings/

Naturally, Toews et al ignored the requirement to prepare the required privacy impact assessment before installing their equipment, but that is par for the course for this government, who seems to think these type of 'pesky' rules don't apply to them.

There's no justification for recording every conversation at an airport or border crossing.

If you don't support recording every conversation at airports and border crossings you must be a pedophile.

.....because terrorists discuss their evil plots while having Starbucks before boarding their flight....

Our so called leaders don't care about your rights. Just get used to not having any privacy whatsoever.

So long as the eavesdropping avoids philanderers who impregnant much younger women out of wedlock, I think Toews will be safe.

So the long-form census is an invasion of privacy, but recording conversations for no apparent reason is fine? Don't these guys have anything better to do?

What continues to disappoint me the most about the Harper Government™ is how little regard they have for Canada's international image. Stop making us look like America Stephen.

Vic Toews reminds me of that kid in elementary school who'd take down names of people who talked while the teacher was out of the room.

Does anyone else remember when Harper was first elected he kept saying that his government would "restore Canada's international reputation" (implying that we were thought of negatively by the rest of the world, which was anything but the case). Now here we are after 6+ years with the CPC in power, and our international reputation has decidedly worsened!

Hey, at least we don't look like America's ######ed step brother, a la Jean Chretien.

And who is this America Stephen you speak of.

They should use these if they're going to violate the privacy of Canadians:

I bet it would still miss the open window and I'll have to shoo it out with a fly swatter.

Civilians are just as much to blame for that as the government though. Between people snapping 8000 pics at a party and putting them up on facebook, youtube videos of everybody doing everything, 4chan tracking said people down, and everybody thinking they need a dash cam or a go pro at all times, privacy doesn't really exist anyways.

Okay if I missed something I'm sorry, and if in fact the plan is to be able to monitor every conversation in an airport then this is definitely a bad idea.

HOWEVER, can anyone actually point out where the article says they are going to record every conversation in an airport?

This sounds to me like they are going to record your interaction with the Customs Agent, which doesn't seem like such a bad idea to me.
Edit: The article if vauge so this is just my assumption, though I'd wager it's a lot more logical than they are going to record every conversation in an airport.

it seems to me the people who are most outraged here would welcome interactions with law enforcement being recorded, as they are usually the ones who are most adamant that most law enforcement are usualyl jerks on power trips.
Let's put in cameras and recorders and get evidence that the man is harassing us!
