My neighbour in YYC got robbed last year. It was my wife that noticed their place looked odd. We used to walk past the back of their house all the time to get to a friends place, they were next to the path. She call the police. The police came and spoke to her and one of the things they said, was that our neighbours made life easy for the robbers by parking their trailer behind their house. As funny as it sounds, the cops said that robbers to case neighbourhoods and track thing like houses with overgrown lawns, campers parked in the back, etc, anything that can be used to signify/tip them off that the owners are not home.

Sorry to hear about the break-in. I too have had my home burglarized, but that was about 15 years ago.

And my step-daughter's home was broken in to twice in one month, last month. Turns out it was a teenager who lived two houses down, and he and a couple of buddies did it both times. The family of the teen is new to the neighborhood, who are living in a former marijuana grow-op house (not sure if they are renting or they bought the place)

My family and I have had the same thing happen to us just over a decade ago. The robber had used a garden tool like a shovel or something to pry open our front door. My dad was pretty high on his coin collection, he had a barrel full of collectable coins which was the only thing that the robber had time to take besides an old school Japanese Nintendo with a ton of games with it.

If it weren't for my dad's friend trying to phone the house every couple minutes he probably would have taken a lot more. To this day, I don't even remember if the guy was caught even if he had left a footprint in the snow.

I live pretty close to beddington and I figured it was a small quiet community just like ours. I hope you catch the thief.

Probably. I just hope the dog doesn't run into #######s like this:

Sorry to hear this, Bean. Invasion of personal property is goes much farther than the "It's just stuff" deflection.

Sorry to hear that Bean.

Does having an alarm system at home help? All these houses are pretty easy to break into if someone wants to. There's almost no way to stop it as houses have so many point of entries.

My sister came home one time to find 3 guys in her house stealing her stuff. One of them made her sit on the couch while the other 2 finished stealing her stuff.

The police were very unhelpful after as well.

I'm sorry to hear about the break-in. I know exactly how you feel. I found the first few nights really hard...I couldn't sleep and when I did, I had a lot of nightmares.

It does get easier. I know it probably doesn't it feel like it right now, but it will.

The police are often useless when it's a quick grab and nobody was injured or assaulted. I had my home (at the time I was living up near Beddington) broken into on 3 seperate occasions over a 4 year period. Nothing was ever resolved.

I'm now in the lawn and all I gotta deal with is being careful walking late at night. Sad times when I was glad to move here. XD

Yeah, I'm actually pleasantly surprised that the police took finger prints in the situation described by the OP.

When my sister described the people to the police, they basically told her that they were likely gang members and that she would be better off not IDing them. No finger prints or anything were taken. She made a statement and they said bye.

What?? Unless I'm missing something here, that is the dumbest thing I've ever heard.

We had our place broken into just this Friday. They managed to get away with a lot of jewelry (but that's all they took). It's only stuff, but some of those things had been in our family for decades and were priceless.

I'm thinking of setting up a camera system that also sends video to a PC outside my home. That, or an alarm system.

Did it mean the house marked with an "X", those with dogs or security systems, were targeted to be robbed or spared?

If the guy knew exactly when people would return (especially your parents), he likely knows your family. A lot of these break-ins are from people you know.

With us it was strange. There was artificial jewelry mixed in with the real, and they actually left behind everything that was fake (some of which was pretty convincing).

Why not take everything and sort through it later? Guess they didn't feel strapped for time or anything.

EDIT: Only realizing now that I got fotze'd .

I think a career burglarer must know what the house has before breaking into it. Other than jewelry, most houses don't have too many things of value these days. It doesn't make sense to haul away those big screen TVs or computers, they are heavy and couldn't be unloaded for much.

Those houses, marked with an "X" (those with dogs or security systems) were not robbed.

It seems to be getting to be a contest. The house on the block, which is least protected, becomes the target.

They stole the beer that my friend bought me to say sorry about the break-in. And they left the fridge open, ruining the NY strip I had thawing for dinner that night. That is the kind of thing that keeps you up at night....

I always though security system is a waste of money, maybe I should get one now. I guess why rob a house with a security system when you have other targets that don't.
