Default Donations in memory of someone...

Does anyone know what sort of options there are for donating a tree or a bench in memory of someone? (specifically in Edmonton)

My grandmother died this morning, and I would like to have a tree planted in a park somewhere.

My condolences for your loss.

I would start here. The City of Edmonton has a specific tree planting memorial complete with plaque: http://www.edmonton.ca/environmental...-planting.aspx. There is also a specific Bench program as well: http://www.edmonton.ca/attractions_r...k-program.aspx

I'm sorry for your loss.

Further to what Drury said, you can also inquire with whatever funeral home your family will be using (if any). Most of them have information or programs you can look into if you wish to have a tree or bench in memory of your loved one. Best of luck.

If you use McInnis and Holloway, a tree-planting is included in the cost of the funeral and other services.

Yes, but they do not tell you which tree, or where in the little forest. To be honest, I doubt they even do. They go out every year and plant x # of trees, who's counting?

My condolences to Byrns.

We donated a bench.

What's kind of sucky about Calgary's program (and I'm not sure if Edmonton has the same thing or not) is that you sponsor the bench for terms of ten years for X amount of dollars.

One on hand, the system makes sense to me, cause someone has to pay for it, but at the same time you're paying thousands of dollars to have the bench established, and it just rubs me the wrong way that you have to pay all over again when 'your time is up.'

At least a tree is forever (or at least I hope it is.)

That program is BS if you ask me.

We have a tree somewhere in the valley along Deerfoot Tr. When it was planted, it was 12-inches high and included a thin piece of cedar with the same of the deceased written with a magic marker. The thing is, though, there were hundreds of trees planted in a one acre plot, so by now I'm sure 3/4 of them have been thinned out.

It's a marketing add-on that makes McInnis and Holloway look more attractive when you're paying outrageous funeral costs.

Anyway . . .

Great idea, Byrns! Sorry to hear about your grandmother.
